The Hotel In a city of fab hotels and palate-pleasing restaurants, The Wedgewood Hotel & Spa in Vancouver comes out on top with discerning travelers (Condé Nast Traveller readers judged it to be Canada's top hotel). Lavish surroundings and a great onsite restaurant (Bacchus) make this newest of Relais & Chateaux members worthy. (Relais & Chateaux is an elite industry association recognized as "The collection of the world's finest restaurants and hotels.") Hotel Style pick, the Wickaninnish Inn of Tofino, BC, is another member.
The Wedgewood's intimate charm - it has just 83 luxurious rooms and suites - makes it an appealing downtown option. The exterior, which is clad in limestone and boasts canopied windows and flower-filled planters, is a handsome landmark in the Robson Square neighbourhood. While the hotel's within walking distance of galleries, shops and restaurants, be sure to spend some time close to "home": blissing out at the onsite spa, taking afternoon tea at Bacchus, or sitting in your spacious living room or private balcony with a coffee.
The Style Owner Eleni Skalbania, a winner of the prestigious Independent Hotelier of the Year Award, built the Wedgewood practically from scratch. In 1984, she bought the then apartment hotel, gutted it and personally redesigned it with the intention of creating "a luxury, Old World, boutique hotel," she says.
The Wedgewood's style was informed by Skalbani's jet-setting and sophisticated taste. The Greek-born Canadian brought some of her own art and antiques into the lobby, and decorated the guest rooms with high-end flair. Think "double soaker tubs, walk-in showers, canopied beds, and beautiful balconies, complimented by an abundance of polished cherry wood, rich damask, raw silk, custom Persian rugs and authentic antiques and crystal chandeliers," says Joanna Tsaparas-Piché, director of sales, Marketing & Public Relations for the property.
The Inspiration Skalbani says she was looking to achieve an "elegant eclectic" aesthetic through her use of colour, pattern and sumptuous texture. This world-class hotel achieves the highest levels of luxury without sacrificing a warm, friendly ambiance. "One very important characteristics of a great hotel is having a place where people can relax, feel comfortable and welcome," says Skalbani.
