How to build an unbelievable gift basket

Gift baskets are easy gift ideas during the busy holiday season. We love the endless options of pre-made ones you can find online, but if you want to give something a little more personal, it’s time to try building your own gift basket.

All you need to get started is to pick a theme, fill your basket with as many gifts as you like, and decorate it with items we know you have stuffed in your present wrapping closet.

Here’s how to build a gift basket that will have people asking, “Where did you get that?”

What you need:

  • A basket (but you can also get creative and use any vessel you like, such as a tote bag, large mixing bowl, or glass bowl)
  • Filler; you’ll need to fill the empty space of your basket so your gifts are propped up. You can use tissue paper, newspaper, cellophane, or anything else you have on hand.
  • Bedding; you’ll need some sort of decorative bedding to cover the filler.
  • Your carefully picked, thought-through gifts
  • Decorations; you can use anything you like here! We love satin bows, silk flowers, ribbon, and tissue paper.
  • Wrapping; you can use cellophane or tulle.
  • Scissors
  • Transparent tape, for securing your goods.

Steps:

1. Prep your basket. If you’re using one that’s been hanging around your home for awhile, make sure to thoroughly clean it and, if needed, give it a coat of spray paint. Fill your basket with your filler until it reaches about an inch from the brim, or as high as you desire. Then, place the bedding on top.

If you can see the filler through the sides of the basket, line your basket with decorative paper.

2. Add your gifts. Carefully place your gifts in the basket, putting the tallest and largest ones at the back and smaller ones at the front. Play with the arrangement until you like how they look. In order to keep your items straight and visible, use transparent tape or glue dots.

3. Decorate. There are no limits here! Add bows, flowers, or baubles to create a magical gift basket. We’ve seen baskets that used candy sprinkled throughout (yum) and others with pretty tea towels twisted between larger items.

4. Wrap your basket. Although this step is optional, wrapping your gift basket is another way to make sure your items stay secured and don’t spill over when you’re transporting them. You can use cellophane or a pretty fabric, such as tulle or chiffon.
