Pass the cocktails, flip the record! This bachelor's dapper digs are designed for entertaining.
With their ratty recliners, bloated leather sofas and piles of pizza boxes, bachelor pads have long been the butt of jokes – stereotypically so unstylish.
But you would never describe Michael Gordon’s digs that way. As sharp as a three-piece suit (one that’s been paired with really cool sneakers), the three-storey open-concept house in Toronto’s Summerhill neighbourhood evokes that casual-chic design balance that can be so tough to pull off.
Loungy furnishings, offbeat art, unique lighting options and snappy rugs give the place laid-back charm. The architectural details, meanwhile, are all business. The main floor is bookended by ceiling-height windows at the front and back, while the hardwood floors are done in smoked oak, bringing warmth to stark white walls.

Energized dining room
A simple dining table can look drab in a stark setting, so Shirley energized the scene with a sparkly geometric light fixture. Interest also arises from the combination of materials, from the linen-blend dining chairs to the wooden table and marble-look platter.

Marble and oak kitchen
A mix of lacquered MDF and smoky oak cabinetry looks sharp in the crisp kitchen, where Caesarstone and marble add to the luxury. “I didn’t want it to feel like this big, solid mass of white cabinetry in the middle of the house, so we broke it up with the dark oak,” says designer Shirley Meisels.

Functional den
It’s a closet, it’s a den – it’s both, actually. Globe-trotting Michael wanted a functional space with room to lay his clothes out to pack – and he can catch up on the news on the flatscreen TV while he does.

Patterned master bedroom
Michael didn’t want the master bedroom to be stuffed with toss cushions or artwork, so Shirley added touchy-feely and patterned decor elements like the moody wallpaper and shearling rug for texture and warmth.

Sleek master bathroom
In the sleek master bath, the light and airy look of the wall-mounted oak vanity and trough-style sink is echoed in the curvy focal-point bathtub, which is enclosed by a glass door.
