The
One of a Kind Christmas Show has been a holiday shopping tradition since 1975 and has grown to featuring over 800 artisans. I love visiting my usual suspects to see what they’ve brought to the show each year, but there’s always a curious excitement for what fantastic new booth I will stumble upon. This year, that booth was Tat.
Tat Chao is an industrial designer from Montreal whose upcycled glass creations instantly caught my eye. Not surprising considering my obsession with lighting. His collection at the show, titled "In Vitro", was developed after many visits to thrift stores and
flea markets, where old glassware teetered abandoned on rows and rows of shelves. What others may have only seen as a thick layer of dust, Tat saw as a new purpose.
By working with old wine glasses he created his Bipolar
pendant lights. The ends were actually a happy accident when the stems broke off during construction. Tat didn’t let them go to waste though, turning them into spinning tops and yo-yos – classic toys turned elegant with their beautiful glass profiles.
The
stunning chandelier is made of glass pieces that are all detachable for easy cleaning and moving, while the candleholders are a mixture of wine and liquor glasses.
After playing with glassware, he branched out into all glass serveware, creating side tables from bowls and plates and the larger pendants, which Tat calls Pearls, from more ornate pieces. His Pearl lights are what originally caught my eye as I walked by. They can be hung vertically and horizontally, and define Tat’s overall vision for his collection. He sees these fixtures, much like all his creations, as jewellery for the home, bringing beauty and ambiance to any space.
While In Vitro gives you an idea of his work, Tat also does custom projects based on the size and style you're looking for. Though, really, all his pieces are unique in their own way, as he rarely ever find more than one or two of the same glass for one project. Something I happen to like about his work.
