Light Up My Life
Are you ready to fall in love? We’ve gathered our favourite über-chic fireplaces to help you keep the home fires burning. Which one will be your next flame?
If you are about to embark on a new construction or renovation project, what type and style of fireplace you want and where to put it deserves careful planning. “You have to consider ergonomics, functionality and the necessary clearance,” says Frédérique Croze of Zü Design & Architecture in Montreal. Consider your needs and lifestyle, he says. The size of the space, the shape of the room, what type of fuel (wood, gas, electric or ethanol) is best for your needs, and how often you are likely to use it will all influence your choice. Frédérique particularly loves the trend to fireplaces suspended from the ceiling. “They serve to partially partition the space while creating a spectacular focal point,” he says. For a more discreet, traditional look, built-in fireplaces are a time-honoured option that can easily be integrated into your existing decor.
When adding or updating a fireplace, ensure that any online product you buy meets local building codes, as well as any condominium bylaws.
There is no better way to foster a feeling of coziness than gathering around a lit fireplace whether it's family games night or a romantic tête-à-tête, beside the fire is the best seat in the house.

Spartherm M700, price on request, agremat.ca.
The Spartherm M700 wood stove requires zero clearance, meaning its firebox is made from materials that make it safe to position against combustible materials – perfect in small spaces.
Globe, from $1,082, vauni.com.
Looking like a pod from the future, the Globe will fit even in small rooms. While it may not be suited for homes with young kids and pets, it adds sophisticated style to grown-up spaces. Its bioethanol-fuelled flame makes a flue less indoor fire possible – ideal for apartment dwellers.
