Pink has a reputation that precedes it. It’s little-girly. It’s frou frou. It’s more silly than serious. Indeed, it is sometimes some of those things and, if you’ve spent any time in a toy store recently, it’s all of those things. But it can just as readily be sophisticated, sexy and glamorous. It all depends on how you wield this wonderfully dynamic hue.

The most recent era when pink was hugely dominant as an interior design colour was the 1980s. Dusty rose, as some might recall, was a staple shade everywhere, from bedroom walls to bathroom tiles to doctors’ waiting rooms. Then of course came the inevitable backlash, which arguably persists today. Pink is still on many people’s list of interior design don’ts, but more and more, we’re seeing it crop up in fine, seductively swish interiors. Is it best to decorate with a judicious hint of pink, or to go for big and bold?

In the bedroom

Dark pink paired with white looks fresh, modern and a little sexy, especially in the bedroom. Go for it in a small way, like opting for a quilt stitched in contrasting dark pink like this bedding, or go full-tilt by pairing it with a hot-pink upholstered headboard.

Bet you never thought of mixing pink with yellow — but you can, and the results can look stunning. In this room, hot pink and nearly-neon yellow play nicely together. Note that only a few items impart a burst of pink. If you swapped them for, say, cream, the look would be entirely muted.
