Pantone has long been the leading authority on everything colour and a bible for designers and artists. When the company started declaring its annual "‘Colour of the Year," they became veritable tastemakers, informing trends that would be seen across fashion, beauty and home design. Upon making its debut, Pantone’s widely anticipated COTY is quickly seen in everything from dresses and boots, and nail polish and eyeshadow to sofas and blankets and everything in between.
When Pantone announced Ultra Violet as the Colour of the Year for 2018, it struck a chord with many for a variety of reasons. After 2017, what many considered a tumultuous year across the globe, this colour appears to be making a statement and addressing some of the feelings that many people are experiencing right now. Ultra Violet, it seems, is much, much more than just a colour.
This purple, for instance, was a significant colour during the women’s suffrage movement in the early 1900s. The suffragettes who marched demanded the right to vote and advocated for women’s rights, all while wearing purple sashes in a shade not unlike Pantone’s Ultra Violet. In fact, there’s actually a women’s rights advocacy group called Ultra Violet, which was founded five years ago and whose work focuses on reproductive rights, healthcare, economic security, violence, and racial justice for all women.
Purple is also a colour often used in campaigns for LGBTQ equality and some have read even further into Pantone’s choice, noting that purple emerges as the result of mixing red and blue, perhaps a reference to the hope that our Democratic and Republican neighbours to the south are able to work together for the good of all people.
