6 fall design trends
With the fall season officially upon us, it’s time to put away those bright summer accents and mix in warm, cozy and inviting elements to your home decor. If the chilly season means you’ll be hunkering down in your home more and more, these tips for using this season's fall design trends will help you update your home and make it more comfortable.
“Seasonal trends are hard,” admits Paige Johnston, Lux Design’s Condo Quickie lead designer based in Calgary. “What I find is people can’t really justify buying a whole sofa in the current ‘it’ shade, such as last season’s Tangerine Tango.” But what people can do, suggests Paige, is play with accessories, accents and small touches to help draw in trends, yet still keep your home in your design style. “Just save and splurge and get in splashes that make sense to you,” she advises. “Incorporate the trends with candles, mixing your metals, throwing on a couple of bold graphic patterns with out breaking the bank.” And fall’s design trends are perfect for adding in small touches without spending a lot of money. “Pillows, frames, fabrics … it doesn’t have to be a big statement piece,” says Paige. “Remember, you don’t have change your whole home to match a trend. It shouldn’t be scary!”
Here are six easy ways to bring the latest fall design trends into your home.
1 Bold graphic patterns
“You watch fashion trends and it comes into home trends as well, “says Paige. Nothing could be truer than the love fashion designers have right now for big, bold, in-your-face prints on the runways. Translate it for your home in a slightly less dramatic way with throw cushions and wallpapers that can add not only colour splashes, but a wonderful mix of texture. “Try a chevron wallpaper as a feature wall in your office or kid’s room; this adds a fun way to add texture and colour,” she says. “Think about the interest of pattern, not necessarily the scale. Small or big can work, but think about having it present in your home.” Chevron Wall Stencil, Esty, $34 US.
2 Layering
Add instant oomph and depth to your home by layering in fabrics, colours and textures for a cozy and comfy look. And it doesn’t have to be tough, too thought out or break the bank. It’s as easy as mixing in some new cushions or adding a chunky throw to your sofa. “Layering has come full circle, from the days of shabby chic to modern decor,” says Paige. “A variety of textures will add interest to any interior. Try putting mixed-and-matched patterned pillows together on your sofa in complementing colours.” Also, try mixing up the sizes of your cushions as well. Delphi Peony cushions, Designers Guild, $135.
3 Colour blocking
From the runway to the living room, colour blocking is a huge trend. It’s also an amazing way to bring some colour into your home and brighten up any living space. “The easiest way to colour block? Take your floral arrangements and group the same colours together. It could be real flowers or faux arrangements – so easy without the investment,” says Paige. Plus it will make a dramatic centrepiece for your dining room table. “We’re seeing a lot of colour blocking fabrics with bold stripes,” she says. For a bigger impact, opt for a throw, blanket, cushion, rug or other fabrics with bold stripes, blocks and patterns. Our favourite combo? Yellow and black. Zak Rug, Crate and Barrel, starting at $619.39.
4 Bronze accents
“Want to change the look of your kitchen but can do without the whole kitchen renovation? Swap your chrome door pulls for bronze handles,” suggests Paige. Bronze adds warmth, texture and gleam to any kitchen making it feel cozier. “I really like mixing metals, but I know it’s daunting for some people. Bronze is such a big fall decorating trend because it is warm and perfect for fall and winter as people get into nesting.” Hickory Hardware Ithaca Vintage Bronze Knob, Home Depot, $5.01 each.
5 The must have fall accessory: Hurricane vase
Chances are you might already have this accessory for its ease to fit into just about any setting. But if not, a simple way to bring this fall’s design trends into your home is with hurricane vases – big, small and in between. “Fill it with rocks in the summer and add a candle at night. For a more festive feel this winter, try filling the vase with cranberries,” says Paige. Pottery Barn, starting at $19.52.
6 Luxe
“Rich colours like burgundy as well as hints of metallic bring glamour and luxe into any home. My favourite piece right now is a black and silver metallic cowhide,” says Paige. If adding in a metallic-tweaked rug is a bit much for you, try bringing luxe into your home with candles in rich jewel and burgundy-toned colours. “Even a simple candle in that colour adds some luxury and elegance,” says Paige. Rustic Luxe Pillar Candles, Pottery Barn, starting at $12.36.
