Arren Williams helps you stay on task with a modern design icon.
As we have all learned, a home office isn’t just an office. Nowadays it’s that multifunctional space used 24-7 for Zooming, gaming, learning, working and more. So, one thing you can bet your backache on is that you need the right chair.
It’s no surprise, then, that Herman Miller’s design- and technology-forward Aeron chair has become the go-to perch for style cognoscenti. The futuristic-looking chair first rolled onto the scene almost 30 years ago, but Herman Miller hasn’t sat on its laurels. The first upgrade came in 2016, with the intro of new materials and a focus on the science of sitting, but the latest news is on the sustainability front, with the Onyx colourway made with more than a kilo of recycled plastic, leading to the equivalent of 23 million plastic bottles saved and recycled annually.
Reverberations of Aeron’s impact on design abound, with style savvy work-from-homers on the hunt for a chair that’s similarly hot on looks and all about getting the job done painlessly. There are even chairs with built-in heat and massage. And while comfort is always key, the other peak is chic, and Aeron delivers on that front, too. In Onyx (above), the chair makes a bold style statement, but we think the soft grey Mineral shade (top right) is the easiest on the eyes for home. Pair it with painted panelling and vintage finds for an on-trend eclectic vibe, then get ready to rock, tilt and roll with possibly the only task chair that’s made it into the highbrow Metropolitan Museum of Art’s permanent collection, as well as been irreverently animated for an episode of The Simpsons.
