“I've always had a passion for design. I love watching design ideas come to life; when drawings and sketches on paper turn into beautiful interiors and architecture—well-planned, efficient, and welcoming. Smart interior design can also solve people’s problems and contribute to social justice in the built environment,” says Anna, who began pursuing her Bachelor of Interior Design (BID) at Yorkville University in 2019. “I chose Yorkville U because of its flexible learning model. I needed classes that I could take at my own pace, and only when I had time for them—in the evenings or on weekends. Online classes suited my needs perfectly, and I was able to balance my studies with my work and personal life.”

Yorkville U’s degree combines a practitioner-focused approach with the flexibility of online learning and multiple start dates throughout the year, enabling students like Anna to develop in-demand design skills based on their own schedule. “The program gave me an extensive knowledge and a great foundation for my future professional development,” says Anna. “After graduation, I was well-prepared to work in the interior design industry. I had theoretical and technical knowledge that is valued by employers,” says Anna, who recently passed her National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) exams and is now a fully certified Interior Designer.

“Interior design is a second career for me, and stepping onto this path, I had to balance my study time with work and two children. I faced a lot of challenges! New country, new language, lack of confidence in myself as to whether I could do it or not. But I tried to take it one step at a time” she shares. “I am very proud that I can call myself an Interior Designer.”

Mandy Wozniak’s path to becoming the Lead Designer at her own studio was spurred by a passion for design and a love of learning.

“From a young age, I was always creating and designing something. Interior design drew me in because it perfectly blends creativity and practicality. The analytical and technical aspects of the job also keep things interesting and balanced,” says Mandy, who originally started studying interior design at Lakeland College in Vermilion, Alberta. “I received the Governor General Award in 2018, and during a luncheon with the college president, I was encouraged to continue my education. This was a pivotal moment. These words of encouragement made me realize the importance of advancing my education to a higher level.”

Mandy transferred her college credits to Yorkville U’s BID program, made possible through a partnership with Lakeland College. “The seamless transition of Yorkville's program was a significant factor in my decision,” she notes. “The strong school community and ongoing support for students and alumni convinced me that it was the perfect place to advance my education.”

“Yorkville U's online format allowed me to create a schedule that worked for my lifestyle. During busy seasons, I could easily adjust my course load by contacting a student advisor, which meant I could take time off to plan my wedding and honeymoon without compromising my education,” shares Mandy. “The flexibility allowed me to work while studying, paying tuition with minimal student loans, and gaining real-world interior design experience.”

Today, she’s in the process of passing her NCIDQ exams and growing her business. “My credential from Yorkville U has given me the confidence and credibility needed to open my own interior design studio. Courses in professional practice helped me structure my business, while psychology and English courses improved my client interactions” says Mandy, who was named a 30 Under 30 Class of 2023 winner by the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA). “This well-rounded education set me up for success and continues to support me, as my NCIDQ exam sponsor is a connection I made through Yorkville. The support from the university is outstanding and helps me feel connected and championed.”

Mandy says that real change—both in life and design—comes from pushing boundaries and going beyond what you could have imagined. Her advice to people considering pursuing their passion? “Embrace the journey with a positive attitude and determination. It may not be easy, but it is extremely rewarding and worth the effort.”
