cupcake decorating: backyard barbecue-inspired cupcakes
Recently, I attended a barbecue-themed engagement party for two of my close friends. After seeing a clever cupcake design posted on Instagram, I jumped at the chance to make a
delicious dessert that was absolutely perfect for the occasion. If you're looking for a
Canada Day party dessert that will be a hit with guests, these mini barbecue grill-top cupcakes are a must-try.
These cupcakes were surprisingly easier to create than I thought with the help of a
step-by-step tutorial I found online. To save time, I made these cupcakes from a boxed mix, but any of these
cupcake recipes will work, too. Once the cupcakes were cool, I piped on
vanilla frosting, which I coloured light orange (using food colouring) and sprinkled with orange, yellow and red coloured sugar to give them that fiery appearance. After that, it was time to decorate!
I made the mini grill tops by tracing the lid of a jar onto a piece of parchment paper. I took dark chocolate melting wafers, placed them in a Pyrex measuring cup and microwaved them on high until they were completely melted (about 30 seconds).
I poured the melted chocolate into a piping bag and carefully traced overtop of the circles. The piping bag and small piping tip were a definite
must-have baking item and reason for the success of this step.
To make the kebabs, I cut gummy bears into smaller pieces with a pair of kitchen scissors and skewered them through toothpicks. Feel free to use your favourite candy or, if you're feeling adventurous, you can try to make mini hamburgers and hotdogs. If you're making these cupcakes ahead of time, I'd suggest putting the chocolate grills in the freezer and taking them out just before assembling so they don't melt.
Happy baking!
