CREATE A ROOM LIKE THIS NO MATTER YOUR BUDGET WITH A FEW SIMPLE DESIGN TIPS:
1 Find a sleek lounger.
Nothing epitomizes laid-back living better than, well, lying back. More than just a poolside prerequisite, a sleek lounger can offer recumbent relaxation in any outdoor space. Whatever your budget, there’s a version for you.
1 Velago Nova lounge chair, $461, homedepot.ca.
2 Zuo Modern sun beach lounge chair, $925, lowes.ca.
3 Wade Logan Orangeville, $320, Wayfair.ca.
2 Know how to care for your outdoor furniture.
If cared for properly, your outdoor furnishings will keep their beautiful appearance year after year. Here’s our crash course on how to maintain common exterior materials (and check out more of our tips here).
- Mesh & fabric: Plastic-coated textiles stand up well to the elements. Clean them regularly with a soft-bristled brush and dish soap; rinse fully and allow to air-dry. Standing water can cause mildew to develop; eradicate it by spraying with a mild bleach solution and rinsing.>
- Rattan & bamboo: When lacquered, these sustainable natural materials can be used outdoors, but cover or keep inside when not in use. Clean as needed with a mild soapy solution; promptly wipe dry with a clean cloth.
- Resin wicker: These woven plastic cords are totally waterproof but can trap dirt. Wash regularly using a soft-bristled brush and a non-foaming cleanser; hose down and air-dry.
- Powder-coated metal: When plated with plastic, metal becomes weatherproof. Wash frequently with a microfibre cloth and soapy water; hose down and air-dry. To avoid rust, keep an eye out for nicks and scratches, and treat promptly with touch-up paint. Handle tough stains with a wax or cleaner intended for cars.
3 Choose the oh-so-trendy Acapulo chairs.
These woven plastic cords are totally waterproof but can trap dirt. Wash regularly using a soft-bristled brush and a non-foaming cleanser; hose down and air-dry.
4 Go for total whiteout.
This relaxing deck gets its chic metropolitan feel from the mostly black and white scheme. We loved the texture of these rattan and bamboo tables but the flaxen hue had to go, so we sprayed them white. With almost unlimited colour options, spray paint is a simple way to unify objects in a strong palette.
5 Ditch black or terracotta planters for white ones.
We’re taking a stark stand on black planters: They’re not the only option! We’re loving white pots — in any size or decorative influence.
1 Campana planter, $30, crateandbarrel.ca.>
2 Socker planter, $15, ikea.ca.
3 Zen planter, $199, cb2.ca.
4 FiberStone Modernist planter, $299, westelm.com.
