Cushion confidential
One of OUR favourite not-so-secret sources for cushion covers is Etsy. It’s a treasure trove of covers made with fabulous designer fabrics for a fraction of the price it would cost to source the fabric and commission a custom cushion.

High/low meter
These armchairs all share the hallmarks of the William Birch style: tight-upholstered curved backs; low, rounded set-back arms; overstuffed seat cushions and turned front legs.
Mercury glass is an understated material that adds some sparkle to a room. A vintage look keeps the bling factor in tasteful territory. This pretty lamp has a shape that’s similar to those in our rooms, but it’s a different material – and has a much lower price. HomeSense, $50. HIGH Moët & Chandon Rosé Impérial Champagne, France, $75. MEDIUM Henry of Pelham Cuvée Catharine Rosé Brut VQA, Canada, $39. LOW Mezzomondo Sparkling Rosé, Italy, $12.
In the pink
Who needs an occasion more festive than Tuesday at 5 p.m. to indulge in one of these chic sips? The colour of rosé champagne and sparkling wine is created by leaving grape skins to soak with the juice during the fermentation process. LOW (left) White three-drawer Boudoir, $1,790, Stacaro. HIGH (right) Century maple three-drawer Cloud with white high-gloss enamel finish, $5,998, Art Shoppe.
Top-drawer design
A three-drawer chest is always a sound furniture investment. Both of these chests feature a curvy serpentine front, jewel-like ring pulls and bun feet. The chest on the left has a pronounced profile and features a matte ivory paint finish and burnished pulls for a slightly casual air. The chest on the right is made of solid maple and chestnut and is hand-finished in sleek high-gloss enamel; it’s available in more than 20 finishes, including eight wood stains, gold or silver leaf, and 11 enamel colours.

Wallpaper
The price of wallpaper is largely determined by both the paper and ink quality and the manufacturing process. Thicker and more ink colours means it takes longer to make. While thinner and fewer colours costs less, but the metallic gold gives it a high-end look.

Botanical beauties
If a whole wall of poppy hued floral wallpaper is a bit too much commitment for you, consider the low-commitment option of paint and a few botanical prints instead. Look for a framed set of prints or save some scratch by creating your own with a little internet research and off-the-shelf frames.
Classic bloom
A potted white orchid is an eternal decorator favourite. The cost depends on the size, quality and maturity of the plant, as well as the material and manufacture method of the flowerpot. Don’t forget to dress up the soil with a bit of moss for a finished look.
