CREATE A ROOM LIKE THIS NO MATTER YOUR BUDGET WITH A FEW SIMPLE DESIGN TIPS:
1 Choose a vintage-style chair.
The iconic wingback chair, a living room classic, has retained its essential shape since it first appeared before the parlour fire sometime in the late 1600s. And although mod cons have done away with the need for the distinctive wings (originally called “cheeks”) that protected the sitter’s head from cold drafts, these stylish furniture pieces are still our go-tos for a comfy cozy evening in.
2 Make it a blue Christmas.
Eschewing traditional reds and greens for the holidays is nothing new, but instead of going all out with shiny gold and silver or doing it up in retro pink and bold peacock, we chose a pale icy shade of powder blue that fits our northern-inspired aesthetic. Then we had some fun by using the colour to paint the ends of the fireplace logs for a whimsical display.
3 Add soft touches.
Layers upon layers of fluffy, silky, sumptuous textures invite everyone to come in out of the cold. This room offers up warmth in the shape of plush toss cushions, faux fur blankets and high-pile floor coverings.
4 For the centrepiece, go for a bowl filled with hand-selected items.
We’ve all felt the irresistible urge to dig through a treasure chest filled with earthly delights, or explore a cabinet brimming with antiques and objets. That same impulse to discover is recreated here in this “Aladdin’s cave” collection bowl. Fill a vessel with vintage ornaments, holiday mementoes, nature walk finds and twinkle lights and let the display do the talking.
5 Take inspiration from cozy winter hotspots.
Decor that complements the beauty of winter goes a long way toward sustaining us through these long dark months. Take one part modern cabin style, add in a bit of cozy library, a few outdoorsy elements and a pale northern-inspired accent colour, and you’ve got a recipe for a room that will nurture the soul until spring.
6 Add a touch of elegance.
The ladylike tripod side table may just be the most versatile piece of furniture you’ll ever own. Undeniably elegant and delightfully small-scale, it’s equally at home in a bedroom, hallway, living room – and even a bathroom. The girl’s all right.
