Taking the floor
Though a finish like this looks hard to effect, it’s not! The trick is to take your time, ensuring that there are no missteps en route to your new flooring options.
1 Sand, vacuum and clean your surface area.
2 Paint the base colour (in this case, white) on the floor and let it dry overnight.
3 Map out your plan on paper, using exact measurements drawn to scale. Carefully measure and mark concentric square bands on the floor.
4 Apply painters’ tape to the outside edges of the bands you intend to colour and paint the inner band (lighter green) first and then the outer band (darker green) in a carefully executed thin coat; let dry.
5 Repeat until you’re satisfied with the finish on the floor (typically two or three coats). Let dry and apply a coat of sealer to the entire area.

Pair outgoing, saturated shades with their demure, pale counterparts to create a harmonious duet that sings in colourful style on the floor. If green isn’t your thing, try one of these paint pairs for a similar effect and gorgeous colour palette.

Introducing an icon
He designed some of mid-century America’s infamous corporate interiors, from New York City’s MetLife building to the Windows on the World restaurant at the World Trade Center, and worked with luminaries like Eero Saarinen and I.M. Pei, but Warren Platner (1919–2006) is doubtless best known for his collection for Knoll, introduced in 1966. Defined by its plush oversized seat on a nest of seemingly thread-thin wire, Platner’s lounge chair pushed the mid-century modern world one step closer to a chair without legs.
High-low meter
Reinterpreted many times over, the original moulded-plastic sidechair was introduced by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller in 1948 and became an instant icon for its cradling contours, smooth waterfall edges and intricate “Eiffel” base. It is a lovely occasional chair.

The rule of three
To those who claim that three’s a crowd, the decor world says “get outta town!” In threes, things stand proud, especially home decor accessories. They look cohesive and collected, creating a vignette meant to draw a moment of appreciation from passersby. Add depth by layering items (short in front) and engage the eyes with various materials, shapes, sizes, textures and colours. See? A small, attention-grabbing grouping like this is as easy as one, two, three.
