9 plants toxic to children and pets
While it's fun to introduce new plants into your home, it's essential to know that some of them can be toxic to young children and pets.
Whether the plant is chewed or swallowed, adverse effects can occur.
It's rare that a child or animal actually gets sick or dies from such poisoning. But since it's impossible to have eyes all the way round your head to keep a constant eye on your animals, prevention is better than cure.
Here are 9 plants that are toxic to children and pets and should be avoided at all costs.
1. Chinese evergreen

This plant is classified as a "toxic perennial". The leaves of this plant are particularly toxic to dogs. Ingestion can cause respiratory problems that can choke the dog, as well as diarrhea, vomiting, and excessive salivation.
2. Pothos

This very popular plant is in fact extremely toxic to young children and animals. The sap contained in its foliage is highly toxic, and can cause damage if ingested.
3. Ficus elastica (Rubber plant)

Often used as an ornamental plant and commonly referred to as rubber, this plant can be toxic. It contains a white liquid called "latex", which can cause damage if ingested.
4. Cycas revoluta (Japanese Sago Palm)

All parts of the Japanese Cycas are toxic. The seeds, however, are the most toxic of the lot. They are easy for animals to find. Caution is advised.
5. Sansevieria (Snake plant)

Sansevieria leaves are toxic if ingested. If ingested in large quantities, animals and humans can experience nausea and vomiting.
6. Aloe vera

7. Jade plant

8. Dieffenbachia (Dumb Cane Plant)

All parts of this pretty plant with spotted leaves are toxic to humans, dogs, and especially cats. If ingested, your companion may develop digestive disorders, kidney failure, and nervous disorders. In short, this plant should be kept well away from your pet.
