Bathroom decor trends 2011

No room in the home gets as much tough love as the bathroom. Water splashes all over the tub and shower surround, sometimes all over the floor, too. Cosmetics and toothpaste sprinkle the sink. Yet we rely on this space beyond function; it can be a place to find some respite from everyday life. The bathroom is where we take a long shower before a challenging day, or soak in the tub after an exhausting one. So it's worth having a space that makes you smile. Here, Canadian designers tell us how to do just that with their top picks for bathroom trends of 2011.

Bathroom decor trends 2011
"Soothing, tranquil bathrooms continue to be on trend. To achieve this, you're looking at using a soothing colour palette and containing the clutter with streamlined vanities."
Lisa Canning, Lisa Canning Interiors, Toronto

"Warm grey neutrals with the addition of white will lend a spa-like experience."
Amy Kent and Ryan Martin, Croma Design, Toronto

Folk- and ethnic-inspired pattern will be big in the bathroom
"One trend I see being translated into bathrooms is the idea of 'folk' or using ethnic, global influences. I think we'll see this in trims on hand-sewn trim on towels, 'folkloric' accessories like birds and flowers, or using reclaimed wood furniture for vanities."
Lisa Canning

"Even though it makes me a bit nervous, because I grew up with a multicolour linen closet where not a single towel matched, we're seeing so much pattern in accessories and upholstered furniture, that it's made its way into our all-white bathrooms. So not just solid colours, but colourful pattern with embellishments like trim on towels."
Samantha Pynn, Contributing Design Editor, Style at Home; host and principal designer, Pure Design

"We'll see textural metallic floor and wall tiles that have a Russian influence."
The residential team of Sizeland Evans Interior Design, CalgaryBringing wood into the bathroom
"2011 sees the 'natural or organic' feel still prevalent in our bathroom choices. Wooden bath tubs and sinks will fill spaces usually reserved for porcelain. New to the family of the popular 'wood look' tiles are 'log cut' tiles for the log cabin feel."
Sizeland Evans Interior Design

"Simple pure design forms will allow rich wood grains and natural stone to take centre stage,"
Amy Kent and Ryan Martin

Utility chic
"The idea of 'utility-chic,' mixing wood and stainless steel, exposed light bulbs or using art that references old signage or subway stops will continue in bathrooms and kitchens alike."
Lisa Canning

The luxury-spa effect is still going strong
"The bathroom is turning into a 'get away' space – while still at home. More square footage will be given to this room, with larger two-person showers and rainshower heads added separately from the tub. We are also adding large windows to the exterior and fireplaces."
Céline Pitre, Céline Interiors, Vancouver

"[Display] art in the bath, to add to the experience of the room."
Amy Kent and Ryan Martin

"I think blue will be a big colour in homes in general in 2011, and it's a great colour to make a bathroom feel relaxing."
Lisa Canning

"Oil rubbed bronze fittings add subtle warmth and interest."
Amy Kent and Ryan Martin

Sinks and tubs will get curvy
"Sinks and tubs will have more sensual shapes – no straight lines here! And free-standing bathtubs are here to stay."
Céline Pitre

"2011 will show us softer shapes for bathrooms – rounder, less rectilinear (hard edges) sinks, toilets, tubs, and faucets."
Sizeland Evans Interior Design

The trends that will get your bathroom noticed
"[We'll see] heavily textured rooms with 3D wall tiles."
Céline Pitre

"Natural stone patterns laser printed onto porcelain tiles. The benefits are they are scratch resistant, no sealant is required (therefore eco-friendlier), durable, cost effective and suitable for use in wet areas, specifically showers."
Sizeland Evans Interior Design

"Waterproof wood coverings – natural and ecological, this product can be used for both floor and wall coverings. Great for nature inspired bathrooms."
Sizeland Evans Interior Design

"Introduce accessories in a natural material, such as a sculptural wood waste basket."
Amy Kent and Ryan Martin

"Touchless (hands-free) faucets and toilets are growing in popularity. Hygiene still has its place in the bathroom!"
Sizeland Evans Interior Design
