The hottest summer décor trends you need to try now

This season, it’s all about the unexpected in the design realm. Shocking colours, contradicting styles and mixed motifs are giving spaces a show-stopping edge.

What happens when industrial finishes are teamed with elegant touches, or when girly-girl pink is paired with cool-kid extras? You’ve got a design that’s as fresh as it is covetable.

From blended styles to attention-grabbing hues, the unexpected is certainly trending in the home décor world. We’re saying goodbye to the one-trick trends of yesteryear (we’re looking at you, Scandinavian-style living rooms and dreamy romantic bedrooms) and ready to add more excitement into our quarters with contradicting elements.

Below, we’re rounding up five of the season's hottest design trends that boast a clever hybrid of styles. With each trend, we’re revealing how you can get the look using the perfect shade of BEHR® Paint and the right accessories.

1. Elegant Industrial

Industrial elements like gunmetal pendant lights and T-back French factory stools can be teamed with elegant extras like mercury vases and gold-rimmed accents to create a striking combo that’s perfect for a kitchen. The secret to acing the look? Choose a backdrop hue that sits in the middle of the industrial–elegant scale. A pale grey shade, particularly BEHR's “Close Knit,” fits the bill. Use this colour on the walls or the cabinets.

2. Millennial

The colour that’s traditionally reserved for little girls’ dream attire and bedrooms has become the most-desired hue among millennials — so much, in fact, this soft pink shade has been renamed as “Millennial Pink.” So, how do you use the trendy shade in your home without channeling a space fit for Eloise at the Plaza? First, choose the right pink — a muted, almost dusty rose like BEHR's “Everything Rosy” is perfect. Second, keep the room simple, and sprinkle it with a few cool extras including abstract artwork and a two-tone printed textile (we suggest a pillow, chair or throw in an exotic blue and white print).

3. Fashion-Forward

A feature wall may be nothing new, but one in a fiery orange hue, like BEHR's “Fired Up,” is sure to give your space a modern edge. Dare to pair the vivid colour with its ultimate clashing shade — black — as seen in this room, which was inspired by an orange and black Dior perfume advertisement circa 1949. The colours work well together (and not at all Halloween-y) thanks to the addition of complementing elements like wood furniture, marble accents, golden touches, and colourful blooms. Easily achieve the look with stylish accessories and old-school extras like a Vogue coffee table book and retro coup glasses.

4. Gothic Glam

During the hot months of the year, light and airy spaces are typically favoured. But, a room that boasts a deep (almost eerie!) wall colour and glossy accessories can offer an icy feel that's covetable on hot summer days. Opt for BEHR's “Midnight Show” and team it with a mix of gothic and glitzy extras like black lacquer furnishings, translucent accessories and a glamorous print. Also, add a black fur throw to the space for extra texture (and for warmth in case the AC is on full blast). Brighten up your glacial haven with bubblegum pink blooms.

5. French Contemporary

Traditionally found in cozy cottages in the French countryside, a room with powder blue walls offers a welcoming and homey feel. Give the traditional room a modern reboot with sculptural or Mid-Century Modern dining chairs, golden touches like an industrial light fixture or serving tray, and colourful abstract artwork. As for which hue of blue to choose? BEHR's “Peek-a-Blue” is a foolproof pick.
