Most pinned: 2018 home design trends according to Pinterest

At the start of every new year, trends abound in the world of design, from fashion to home. Many of us resolve to try new things and make a fresh start — and we can all agree there’s no better place to get inspired than Pinterest!

To kick off the year, Pinterest has released its "Pinterest 100," a list of the top trends that emerged on the platform based on user behaviour. And considering that Pinterest offers up over 14 billion ideas, it’s a no-brainer to look to them for ideas. Scroll down to find out which trends topped the list and which ones you might want to try in your own home this year.

Big wall art

Blank walls begone! Fill empty spaces with beautiful, large-scale artwork. Try oversized canvases or add a personal touch by blowing up your own photography, framing and hanging it in a high-traffic room.

Patterned plants

If you thought pattern in your home was limited to wallpaper or drapery, think again! Patterned houseplants like the tropical prayer plant or maranta are all the rage. And with all the healthful benefits of houseplants, plus vibrant colour, pattern and texture, it’s not hard to see why!

Mixed metals

The notion of mixing metals is not a new one, but it’s one that’s still going strong. Can’t decide between silver or gold? Brass or chrome? A polished or brushed finish? You don't need to be exclusive in your choices. Go ahead and mix metals in your home for a look that’s more casual.

Terrazzo

Terrazzo flooring is the ultimate throwback trend this year. You may remember the look from school floors back in the 70s and while there was very little that was exciting about it back then, it’s all grown up and is totally chic and on trend in 2018. It looks like flecks of marble or granite mixed into clay and there are lots of ways to incorporate the look into your home, from flooring and ceilings to gorgeous accessories like this coffee table from Anthopologie.

Statement ceilings

Sometimes referred to as the fifth wall, the ceiling is often overlooked in home design ... but no longer! This year, look up and see a world of possibilities for adding visual interest to your ceiling. From paint and wallpaper to beautiful architectural details like coffering, you’ll be surprised how many options there really are.

Spa bathrooms

Don’t you just love a stunning spa-inspired bathroom? Maybe you experienced all the wonders of one at a hotel or have seen your dream bathroom inside the pages of your favourite magazine. Well, this is the year of making your bathroom dreams a reality! From heated floors and deep soaking tubs to marble tiles and rain shower heads, you deserve a sanctuary to relax in!

Bone inlay

Anything made with bone inlaid tiles instantly goes from ordinary to extraordinary! It’s easy to incorporate this trend into your home in both big and small ways. Opt for large-scale pieces like coffee tables or full-length mirrors like the one pictured here or go small with accessories like a jewelry box or photo frame.

Sage

Pantone may have declared ‘Ultra Violet’ the colour of the year for 2018 but if this bold hue isn’t quite your speed, you’ll be happy to know that a softer, subtler shade is also on trend this year. Sage is the new neutral for 2018 according to Pinterest and can be used to great effect in any room in your home.

Herringbone patterns

When you think herringbone, you probably think of wood flooring but this enduring trend has so many applications. We love when tile placement is reimagined and a herringbone pattern is both unexpected and beautiful.

Colourful doors

Nothing says ‘welcome’ quite like a brightly coloured door. There’s no right or wrong way to approach this one. Just find your favourite shade, whether it’s a juicy citrus, a rich red or a pretty pastel and go for it!
