A modern-meets-glamour family home Author: Barry Calhoun
This Vancouver home is ready for its close-up, thanks to a design dream team who transformed its traditional interior into a cozy and modern family abode.
Sometimes what starts out as a simple one-room renovation inspires a whole-house makeover. That was the case for the owners of this 4,300-square-foot four-bedroom home in the leafy Dunbar neighbourhood of Vancouver. The couple’s initial plan to overhaul the leaky master bathroom kick-started a total facelift of the five-year-old abode’s traditional interior. “It was looking brown and boring,” says designer Kelly Deck. “One of the owners is a fashionista, and she wanted the space to reflect that, so we went with a modern-meets-glamorous aesthetic showcased in classic grey.”

Kitchen design
Pale grey leather bar stools provide comfortable seating at the kitchen island. “I love these bar stools because their soft contours suit almost any interior, and you can upholster them in leather all the way down the leg,” says designer Kelly Deck. The glass chevron-patterned backsplash adds subtle interest.

Great room
With a textured wool rug and a sectional big enough for the young family of five to snuggle on, the great room is intimate and inviting. The metallic side table adds a little bling, while the artwork over the fireplace was chosen for its scale and warmth.

Master bedroom
Layers of rich blue and shimmery grey in the furniture, drapery and accessories create a luxurious master bedroom. The chandelier was selected for its wide, shallow form to take up volume in the vaulted ceiling. The artwork above the bed is unexpected and causes visual tension.

Master bathroom
The design team kept the original configuration in the master bathroom but replaced the deck-mounted bathtub with a freestanding one for a clean, contemporary look. A marble floor in a herringbone pattern is a timeless choice.
