Lakes and docks, the call of loons, rocky shorelines and rustic
family cottages are the hallmarks of Canadian cottage country, but that didn’t stop Toronto designer Jennifer Ferreira from drawing on a chic Floridian aesthetic when she designed this 1,000-square-foot boathouse on Ontario’s Lake Muskoka. Inspired by the homeowners’ annual vacation spot in Miami Beach, Jennifer took artistic licence to reference the elements in a sophisticated
black and white colour scheme coupled with organic touches. “I realized it’s an easy serenity that marks modern Miami style,” she says, “and that no matter where you are, you can always decorate to evoke that beachy simplicity.”
Living room
A nod to the white buildings of Miami Beach finds expression in the all-white walls of the open structure, and a vase of tropical greens hints at Florida’s towering palm trees. Beyond this, the decor has a minimalist appearance that seamlessly brings the outside in.
Lakeview
The black and white palette is a far cry from the blues and reds typical of nautical style decorating. Inside the two-bedroom boathouse, which the owners use as a guest house and entertaining venue, views of Lake Muskoka, just beyond the French doors, remain the focus.
Ocean accents
Home decor accents such as a model schooner and ocean treasures keep the room beachy without being predictable.
Bedroom
Linen bedding and a Roman shade give this bedroom a fresh beach style feel. If you’re designing a coastal casual space for summer, turn to linen. It’s surprisingly dirt resistant and retains moisture without feeling damp. “No matter where you are,” says Jennifer, “you’ll feel that relaxed beachy vibe.”

A floating vanity, clean lines and white fixtures keep the simple-is-serene aesthetic in the bathroom design.
