10 wedding DIY projects

Your wedding day is undeniably one of the most special and important days of your life. It’s a chance to start a life of love with another person and an opportunity to celebrate with family and friends. It may feel like the one day when you can splurge and go all out to help celebrate. But at the same time, weddings can be plain expensive. The cost of food, drinks, flowers, special touches and decorations all add up … and we’re not even adding in the cost of the wedding dress and shoes! Your expenses can blast through your budget quickly – sometimes happening a few months before the big day. It may be a very important day, but it’s also good to remember that it is one day – and a lot of money is spent on one day that will likely fly by.

Thankfully, with a little prep, thoughtfulness and some free time, there are ways to save when it comes to your wedding day. Here are 10 easy ways to save, plus some great ideas for wedding DIY projects. wedding-diy-stamper.jpg
1 A personalized stamp
Rather than spending the money to get personalized stationery in every aspect for your wedding, think about buying a personalized stamp with your initials and wedding date and stamp envelopes, thank you cards, table cards and menus for a more affordable option. The Penny Paper Co., prices range. wedding-diy-glass-vase-flowers.jpg
2 Use vintage vases, tea cups and bottles
Anything vintage will instantly add character to your wedding. Try using vintage vases to hold flowers for table centrepieces, candy, party favours and even candles. You can pick up some vases at bigger stores, or take a few weekends to look through antique shops and hit up garage sales. Pottery Barn, $31.24 - $113.47. wedding-diy-confetti-hearts.jpg
3 Vintage paper hearts
Find yourself a heart shaped hole puncher (many craft stores carry this) and punch out hearts from your favourite novel. Shakespeare is always a great choice and anything by Jane Austen will also work! TheLonelyHeart on Etsy, $17.14. wedding-diy-glass-jar.jpg
4 Use glass jars for ... everything
Glass jars and mason jars will serve so many purposes and are relatively inexpensive. Try using them to hold tea lights for a soft romantic glow, holding flowers, or fill them to the rim with jams, jellies or sweets as a parting favour. Tie them up with string and add a label with your initials and wedding date as an added touch. West Elm, $3.72-$4.78. wedding-diy-table-cards.jpg
5 Print your own table numbers and place cards
Table toppers are a great place to add some creativity and have some fun. You can find some great options on etsy.com for printable versions that you can customize – or create your own from scratch. Rather than sticking to simple table numbers, some great ideas to think about are places you’ve travelled, songs you both love and books or movies that have played a special role in your relationship. VintageLovesRoses on Etsy, $15.90. wedding-diy-fabric-flower.jpg
6 Try fabric flowers over real ones
If you’re handy with fabric, try creating your own fabric flowers – you’ll get the shades you want, they won’t wilt or die by the end of the evening, and you’ll have them as a keepsake for years to come. jewelboxballerina on Etsy, $8.83. wedding-diy-fonts.jpg

7 Fonts can be your best friend
There are loads of free fonts available online (try dafont.com) and they can provide endless possibilities for signs, menus, programs and more. You can also make your own signs that say things like Just Married, Mr. & Mrs., etc. Just print on thick, high-quality cardstock or take to a print shop. dafont.com, prices range. wedding-diy-glass-bowl.jpg
8 Create a candy bar
An easy and fun way to keep guests happy is with a simple candy bar – fill large glass bowls with your favourite candies, retro candy or colourful gumballs and jellybeans. It’s a simple way to keep guests munching in between entrees and cake and is also a fun DIY. Stamp paper bags with a personalized stamp and let guests fill up their paper bags for a fun takeaway. Crate and Barrel, $6.31. wedding-diy-lace-clips.jpg
9 Add touches of lace
Lace and weddings go hand in hand and can add a vintage feeling to your wedding decor. Add it to tables for an ultra-feminine feeling, or dress up things like clothespins to hold pictures on string or wire. thepapergirl on Etsy, $6.65. wedding-diy-cake-toppers.jpg
10 Cake and cupcake toppers
So many weddings are going for a more natural feel when it comes to cakes; rustic cakes or cupcakes are new favourites. Take your cakes to the next level by topping them with cute cut-out frames with personalized messages. Some suggestions: You’ll Burn it Off Tomorrow, What Calories?, Love is Sweet, Take a Treat. MayPLDigitalArt on Etsy, $6.75.
