Project: Mini goodie bags

These delightful goodie bags are a far cry from brown paper grocery bags! Crafting a bag from paper is simple to do and looks so much better. Use these to wrap gifts, hold treats like cookies or crackers, or even to store small items on a shelf. Adding a personalized message on the front will make it extra-special.

Prep the bag template

Download the goodie bag template from www.chroniclebooks.com/papercraft, adjust to the size required, and print onto the back side of the light- or mediumweight paper. Using a utility knife, carefully cut out the template on a cutting mat (see Fig. 1). Using a bone folder and a ruler, score lightly along the lines on the back of the paper so they will fold more easily (see Fig. 2).

Construct the bag
Fold down the flaps along the bottom edge of the bag. Glue the long side tab to form a bag shape (see Fig. 3).

Form the base of the bag
Use a glue stick to secure the base of the bag, folding in the short end tabs first (see Fig. 4).

Finalize construction

Form the pleats down the sides of the bag by pressing the long edges together gently so that the paper is pushed inward (see Fig. 5).

Add decorative elements
Using scissors, cut a half oval shape in the center of the top edge to mimic a
shopping-bag look (see Fig. 6).

Finishing touches
Use pinking scissors to cut across the top edge to finish the look (see Fig. 7). Embellish and customize your bag with labels or rubber stamps (see Fig. 8). Add goodies and finish it off by stuffing the bag with colorful tissue, if desired.

Additional ideas
  • Try different types of ribbons and strings or even a paper handle.
  • Fold down the top, and seal with a pretty label.
  • Don’t have time to make your own bag? You can still customize a premade bag or lunch bag by adding ribbon handles and decorating with labels, stickers, and rubber stamps.
