Interior: A bright modern nursery
More than halfway into my pregnancy, my husband, Niall, and I hadn’t acquired any furniture for the baby’s room in our Toronto home – when I’d get in from work, all I’d want to do was eat cookies and nap. So we called in
Style at Home contributing design editor Samantha Pynn to help turn our 10-by-14-foot guest room into a nursery.
When it came to the look, we really wanted something modern and hip. Nothing sugary and sweet, and no pink! We wanted the nursery to be gender neutral, with juicy bursts of colour.
A modern nursery
The rug was customized with sky blue tiles (made from recycled carpets) in the centre and soft cream tiles around the perimeter of the room. Contributing design editor Samantha Pynn made the wall decals using simple animal stencils and wallpaper scraps.
The modern rocker is Mom and Baby’s place, so it needed to be a highlight in the room. Decorating with orange definitely sets it apart.
Changing table
This change table with storage was made from a solid pine IKEA dresser. Wooden bumpers were attached, then the whole piece was given a coat of VOC-free paint and topped with an organic change pad. The cr eamy paint colour ties in with the off-white carpet tiles.
The room is punctuated with home decor accessories in bright, colourful accents. These can easily be changed to a new palette later on.
Home decor accessories
Big throw cushions in playful Virginia Johnson fabrics are fun for crawling babies to explore, presided over by a handmade black cat. Made from multicoloured paper lanterns, the mobile is a nod to homeowner Helen Racanelli’s Chinese heritage.
Mini bookshelves
Made in Europe, Oeuf’s Mini Library bookcase has a durable, non-toxic water-based finish. There’s a hint of brown courtesy of the walnut stain, which matches the drapery pattern.
The custom upholstered mirror was inspired by a photo in a book that Helen and Samantha perused together; cream piping boosts its luxe factor.
The wall paint, carpet and furnishings are kept soft and neutral, but the books and toys add lots of fun colours.
