9 Fresh Yet Timeless Bathroom Trends
The bathroom is an expensive room to renovate, so when it comes to trendy looks, unless your budget is very healthy, you’ll want to hit the sweet spot between a space that looks fresh and on trend and one that can easily be updated when the “it look” looks dated. Here’s a rundown of the latest trends and how to make choices you’ll love for years to come.
1. Throw Us A Curve

We love freestanding tubs with a soft curvaceous silhouette. In a smaller bathroom, consider a tall, compact Japanese-style round tub. Faucets, too, have a rounded profile with graceful high arcs that provide a swooping punctuation mark.
2. Get Personal
Bring your own unique aesthetic sense to the space with objects you find beautiful. Works of art, plants, a knockout shower curtain and matching Roman blind, or a small chair all add personality. Or try a stunning feature wall by the tub, such as a lime plaster paint finish or a botanical mural.
3. Pretty In Pastels
Decades – in the decorating world – are practically defined by colour. That’s especially true for bathrooms. Show us a pink or minty green tiled bathroom and we’d say: 1920s. Then again, we’d also say: today! Soft pastel shades are making a come-back, even in fixtures like sinks, tubs and toilets. If you love the look, go for it. If you think you’ll gravitate to the next “new” hue when it arrives on the horizon, introduce this pastel palette with easy-to-switch-out towels, bath mats and accents.
4. It's Your Choice

Small or large, when it comes to tile, it’s up to you. Extra-large 24-by-24-inch tiles are popular, reduce the amount of grout lines, and can visually enlarge a small space. But small rectangular tiles with a handmade look that are installed horizontally or stacked are also on trend. Tile really establishes the look of the bathroom, so take your time on this decision.
5. Two's Company
It takes two, apparently, to shower! A walk-in shower equipped with two shower heads is twice as trendy as a single-person shower. A frameless shower (clear tempered-glass panels) is always a popular choice; if more privacy is desired, build your luxe shower behind partial- or full-height tiled walls.
6. Check-In Time
Hotel bathroom design is having an influence on storage details: hair dryer drawer, built-in makeup table, hidden drawers and built-in medicine cabinets all banish clutter and increase the functionality of this high-use room.
7. All The Feels

Texture brings warmth to the bathroom, which is a space that can, at times, suffer from overly clinical hard surfaces. The vanity is a good place to introduce the warmth and texture of wood. Also consider 3D tile and panels to create visual texture with graphic patterns or even fluted surfaces.
8. In The Zone(s)

This trend for wet (shower/tub) and dry (vanity/storage) zones in the bathroom has travelled from luxury hotels to homes, bringing a spa experience to everyday living. The challenge is ensuring the wet area is watertight and waterproof. This means special floor drainage systems, non-porous waterproof materials (unless you’re willing to reseal annually), and simply having enough room in your layout. The bonus? A sense of spaciousness and luxury because of the open plan, and greater accessibility due to curbless showers. Designer Tip: If there’s room, tuck the toilet in a separate room- within-the-bathroom for privacy.
9. See The Light
Gone are the days when a simple on-off switch was the only way to control light in the bathroom. Now it’s about multiple sources: pot lights, sconces, perhaps a pendant over the stand-alone tub or taking centre stage in a powder room. Don’t forget about non-electric sources: use mirrors or gorgeous wallpaper with a reflective metallic finish to bounce light. LED strips behind mirrors, along the vanity kickplate or illuminating shelves are another great way to layer lighting. And remember to put everything on a dimmer switch so you can transition from high-light activities like shaving to relaxing long soaks. For an extra wow – lit mirrors!
