Bathroom decor: Blissful blue makeover
Style at Home's managing editor, Catherine Therrien transforms her master bath with a few unique saves and some worthy splurges.
Style at Home’s managing editor, Catherine Therrien, takes her master bath from boring beige to blissful blue, adding her stylish mark with a few unique saves and some worthy splurges.
The before
The master bathroom was a sea of beige and white. Since homeowner Catherine Therrien’s day starts and ends in this space, it was important for her that the look be fresh and uplifting.
The after
Watery blue walls are a pleasing contrast to the white cabinetry, soft grey marble countertop and shiny chrome fixtures – all finishes that came standard with Catherine’s new-build house – so little had to be upgraded in that regard. Personal touches were injected through vintage decor pieces, family heirlooms and playful artwork.
Bathroom hardware
Stainless steel drawer pulls were replaced with pretty Lucite versions. Since only seven were required, they were worth the extra expense.
Patterned rug
A soft chenille-and-jute chevron patterned rug covers the expanse of grey porcelain tile, providing warmth underfoot and a welcome dose of pattern and texture.
Lucite stool
With plenty of space to spare in the 200-square-foot bath, an airy Lucite stool was added to the bathroom decor, giving the illusion of openness and a touch of sparkle.
Stylish storage solutions
This antique medicine cabinet belonged to Catherine’s parents, and she called first dibs on it when they decided to renovate their own bathroom.
Colourful artwork
Like any other room in the house, the bathroom needs decorative elements to feel complete. Colourful original artwork does the trick here.
Original prints
Prints from an Etsy shop in inexpensive frames create cheap and cheerful artwork.
Hand-sewn valance
Although the patterned fabric was a splurge, Catherine saved by sewing the valance herself.
Countertop accessories
The oversized mirror came with the builder home. Its simple, clean frame still complements the new look of the bathroom design. These vintage glass jars with cork tops are actually meant for storing pasta, but they work equally well holding beauty essentials.
