An elegant bathroom design with lots of white and lots of light.

Luxury was a priority when Monica Dyer and her husband, Drew Elliott, created this white and bright master ensuite , part of a project they undertook almost two years ago to expand the third floor of their Victorian rowhouse in Toronto. “We wanted a place we could retreat to,” says Monica. To emulate a relaxing yet chic European hotel feel, she opted for a free-standing soaker tub, herringbone-patterned marble floors, tiled wainscotting and vintage-look nickel faucets. Hits of linen, via the Roman shades and sconces, lend softness to the space.

The bigger, the better
The vanity’s Shaker-style doors tie in with built-ins in the couple’s master bedroom, and the two-and-a-half-inch-thick marble countertop has a substantial, ultra-luxe look. Wainscotting made of white ceramic subway tiles offers texture and interest. “We put it a little higher up,” says Monica. “Ceramic subway tiles are so accessible and affordable and yet offer such high impact.” Pivot mirrors framed in nickel complement the space’s classic, European vibe.

 

 

Old meets new
Set under the big window, the sculptural cast-iron soaker tub, a contemporary version of an old claw-foot tub, is paired with a traditional nickel faucet. “Everyone was saying, ‘Stay away from nickel! Stay away from nickel!’ because it tarnishes,” says Monica. “But we like the look of that. It gets a nice patina.” The glass-enclosed shower enhances the airy feel of the all-white space and keeps sightlines open to the deck and trees beyond.
