A full bathroom renovation takes a cramped, poorly laid out space and turns it into a well appointed salon that defines sophistication.

Bathroom design problem

The original bathroom was cramped and poorly laid out, with 1930s-era tiles and fixtures that were badly in need of updating.

After the renovation

A complete gut job was done as part of a larger upstairs home renovation, with space created by removing two closets and annexing some space from an adjacent bedroom.

Properly appointed salon

"I wanted the space to feel like a properly appointed salon, not a regular old bathroom," says Style at Home design editor and homeowner Jessica Waks.

The new layout

The bathtub was placed at one end of the long, narrow room and a spacious shower at the other. A new double vanity allows both husband and wife to get ready easily in the mornings.

Floors and tiles

Walnut-look porcelain tiles laid in a herringbone pattern emulate solid wood floors. Unlike hardwood, the tiles stand up well to water. The vinyl wallpaper that mimics grasscloth is a practical choice that won't be harmed by a bathroom's moist environment.

Design extras

A dramatic clawfoot tub with nickel-plated feet, sconces with pleated shades, framed prints and a Roman shade lend the space refined glamour.
