See how this once drab bathroom became a functional space. Author: Angus Fergusson
A family of five sharing one bathroom could be a recipe for disaster, but the addition of smart storage, easy-to-clean surfaces and colourful accessories makes this a superbly functional space.
One small bathroom, five family members (including three small children) and no storage adds up to stressful mornings getting everyone ready and out the door on time. Style at Home design editor Stacy Begg and her husband, Don Saynor, share the main bathroom of their Toronto home with daughter, Georgia, 5, and twin sons, Tommy and Willie, 4. “There’s a third-floor master suite, and we may move the boys upstairs when they’re a bit older,” says Stacy, “but for now, we like being on the same floor as the kids.”In lieu of a bedroom switcheroo or an even bigger renovation, the couple decided to update the existing space by ripping out the old fixtures and starting fresh.

Before
“The original bath was very dated with a dropped tongue-and-groove cedar ceiling,” says homeowner and Style at Home design editor Stacy Begg. The woodclad ceiling was the first thing to go, since it made the space feel dark and oppressive. Tearing it out meant the room gained five inches of height and a lot of light.

Modern-style bathroom
The updated look is decidedly modern and sophisticated, with glossy floor-to-ceiling subway tiles creating a clean white backdrop. Black hexagonal floor tiles have a grounding effect, and dark grey grout and matte black fixtures provide a pleasing contrast.

The vanity
A clean-lined IKEA vanity with two large drawers is simple and contemporary and easily wiped clean. The orange sconces pop against the white subway-tiled wall and are super fun for the under-six crowd (and the adults, too!).

White subway tiles
Glossy white subway tiles running from floor to ceiling around the entire room look striking with dark grey grout. “I thought about installing the tiles at wainscotting height on one wall, but I like the more modern look of it this way,” says Stacy.

Adding more space
The layout stayed the same, with the exception of a strangely placed corner vanity that was moved into a flush position against one wall. A new Ikea vanity and tall cabinet that was modified to fit at one end of the tub offer plenty of space to stash bath supplies.

Fashion-forward accessories
Fashion-forward accessories, such as Jason Wu for Brizo matte black tub and shower fixtures and a shower curtain made from striped Diane Von Furstenberg fabric in punchy pink and orange, jazz up the newly contemporary space. Stacy continued the hot scheme with carrot-hued nautical sconces – a playful choice for a family bathroom.

Storage solutions
In a family bathroom, storage for towels and toilet paper is important. A tall narrow cabinet is tucked into what was previously unused space. The chrome towel warmer was an efficient and luxurious way to hang lots of towels with limited wall space.

Beautiful and functional
Other kid-friendly features like easy-to-clean surfaces and loads of storage ensure the new bathroom functions just as beautifully as it looks. Mission accomplished!
