How’s this for brave? Blogger and designer Christine Dovey tackled a reno of her 45-square-foot master bathroom while hundreds of people watched — and commented — online.

Christine's bathroom wasn’t an eyesore to begin with, but shoddy workmanship from a 2006 renovation meant the space was past its best-before date. And so, the designer signed herself up for the One Room Challenge, an online event where 20 designers have six weeks to complete a project, sharing process photos as they go.

Christine used PowerPoint to help her imagine the finished product. “In my head, the design worked, but making a collage is the easiest way to verify that,” she says. Here’s how she did it. Step 1: Christine took pictures of items she already had, imported them into the program and erased the backgrounds using a special tool. Step 2: Next, she searched online and copied and pasted images of the things she planned to buy (like the toilet and towel rack) directly into the document. Step 3: To build the background, Christine duplicated images of the wall and floor tiles. Visual perspective is important for a realistic effect.  Step 4: The final step involved arranging the images on the background. “It’s about 95 percent accurate to how the room turned out,” she says.

The existing vanity got a fresh coat of pale grey paint. Christine mounted the lucite toilet paper holder discreetly on its side.

Framed artwork gives the bathroom a decorated look, making it feel like a lived-in space.

A glass shower wall is barely visible, allowing the tiles to be the room’s focal point.

Christine’s prized vintage pendant lights flank the floor-to-ceiling mirror.

The black-painted window frame punctuates the marble wall and is reinforced by the trim on the towels and the detailing on the pendant lights. Christine mounted the neon pink “Reverie” sign above the lucite towel rack for a playful touch.
