A Bachelor Pad Turned Family Home in Toronto

Stellar design, sumptuous materials and a dream team of three are a winning combo in this Toronto new-build.

When Toronto contractor George Kozoronis decided to build his own house, it was no surprise he hired Liz Reyes and Julia Nicastro to design the interiors. The trio frequently collaborate on work for clients, so teaming up for a personal project was an easy decision. Liz and Julia responded with a relaxed, sophisticated design that would suit his bachelor life now, but could easily transform into a family home later, and, of course, be a celebration of beautiful materials and great design. In a way, it was kismet. During the project, George got engaged, and the suave bachelor pad was instantly transformed into a cozy home for two.

CABINETRY, Kiváló Fine Cabinetry. BACKSPLASH, Ciot; FABRICATION, Marble & Granite Stonecraft. Porcelain SURFACING (on island), Marble Granite Depot; FABRI- CATION, Marble & Granite Stonecraft. Parson COUNTER STOOLS, Rove Concepts. Jenn-Air WALL OVENS, FRIDGE, Goemans. PENDANT LIGHTS, Luminaire Authentik. Vogt Drava FAUCET, Taps. BOWL, Crate and Barrel. CAKE STAND, Pottery Barn.

In the kitchen, exquisite materials take centre stage. The porcelain backsplash and perimeter counters feature big, bold veining for the look of marble without the upkeep. They look almost like abstract art set against the cool, smooth backdrop of the grey island and light-tone rift-sawn oak cabinetry.

Light Fantastic

Several different kitchen lighting sources can be individually controlled, allowing for a perfect balance between aesthetics and practicality. Strip LEDs in the ceiling illuminate the island seating, while a trio of hanging globes add function; recessed lighting inside an open shelf in the backsplash wall creates instant drama.

Pause & Refresh

Rubinet FAUCET, Taps. Offcut marble COUNTERTOP, Marble & Granite Stonecraft. Jenn-Air panel-ready undercounter BEVERAGE CENTRE, Goemans. PAINT, Polo Blue 2062-10 (drinks station), Benjamin Moore.

The top floor features both a home office and a leafy outdoor deck for entertaining, so a compact refreshment station saves schlepping down to the kitchen for a drink.

WALL PAINT, Titanium OC-49 (dining room), Benjamin Moore. Custom DINING TABLE, Kiváló Fine Cabinetry. Custom BANQUETTE, Modern Trend Interiors; FABRIC, Primavera. DINING CHAIRS, Rove Concepts. LIGHTING, Artemide (dining room); Luminaire Authentik (foyer).

The main-floor dining room, with its curvy chairs, upholstered banquette and loopy abstract light fixture, has just the right mix of chic modern design and relaxed conviviality.

Room for All

Different zones based on function help to organize space in the small backyard. In the raised dining area, a custom pergola provides shelter from the sun. The tall fences and solid brick walls create a sense of enclosure and privacy, making the backyard more like an outdoor room; mirrors resemble windows, furthering the illusion of an interior room and visually expanding the space.
