The Coast is Clear
Cool oceanic blues and peachy sunset hues bring the colour and beauty of the West Coast to this Vancouver new-build.
Vancouver is coastal, but it’s not tropical like Florida, and it’s not “nautical like Nantucket,” says designer Lindsay Quinn Levin of Sincerely Lindsay Design Co.. It’s urban and global, and it’s also in a rainforest. So, when she introduced coastal hues to this newly built home, she did so with an emphasis on global wares (pillow textiles from Asia; baskets from Africa) and Vancouver’s natural surroundings. Inky blues inspired by the Pacific were paired with the evocative greys of a West Coast winter, then made radiantly modern with cameos of nearly-neon azalea pinks and sunset-worthy peach tones. “Coastal living is all about going with the flow,” says Lindsay. “For this family of six, we created that experience with a look that’s open, natural and easygoing.”

A big bobble of a chandelier shines above a sectional that’s generous enough for all six family members to snuggle at once. Indigo pillows bring the ocean to mind, while neon-hued baskets serve as wall art. “They’re a vibrant handmade alternative to framed prints,” says Lindsay. A woven basket holds a fig tree; a second basket serves as a carryall.

“Tiling the fireplace in blue was the very first thing we did,” says Lindsay, pictured below plumping pillows. The hearth is flanked by custom millwork that displays natural baskets and maritime glass. “Brass library lights and hardware add a hit of sparkle during the day and a golden glow at night,” says the designer.

Piano practice takes place in an area delineated by a striped jute rug. Huge baskets with bobbled lids and happy patterns catch playthings. Vivid hues are celebrated on floating shelves showcasing kids’ art.
Weave Your Way

Woven seating in the piano and kitchen areas is paired with baskets. “The textures and tones look great from all angles, and bring instant dimension and interesting shadows to the more modern aspects of a home,” says Lindsay.
Light & Airy

“To delineate zones in an open-concept house, use oversize lighting fixtures,” says Lindsay. The pendants in the kitchen feature a cloud-white cap that’s soft in tone like the foggy blue island below.

“The primary bedroom features a wall of rich matte black shiplap,” says Lindsay. In contrast, the white dresser and end tables have a smooth, bright sheen. “The warm peach tones in the beachy wall art and cluster of vases say coastal, not nautical.” The brass-and-marble wreath statue is an elegant reference to nature.

A feathery Bamileke Juju hat hangs over a charcoal linen headboard. Casual striped bedding is layered with an indigo pillow and ink-toned woven throw. The brass sconces look vintage. “Crisp modern shades keep them from looking too heavy,” says Lindsay.
Pattern & Plants

Dotted motifs adorn the powder room walls. The vanity area is grounded by a striped faux-resin mirror and oversize sconce. “The perky leaf print and fresh sprigs are an easy way to blend botanicals with geometrics,” says Lindsay. The variegated tile floor is laid in a herringbone pattern.
