The oak dining table was found in a local antiques store, but homeowner Jean Longpré designed the accompanying five-seater benches himself. The French doors lead to an outdoor patio that works as an extension of the indoor living space because it’s made of the same bricks as the interior floors.

"I love mixing high-end pieces with lower-end items like the IKEA cabinets," says James. An extra-long sofa creates more seating without cluttering up the space. The bank of IKEA PS cabinets (they can be locked) is a space-savvy way to create a storage and display area.

Editorial elements

Though tenant Alessandra works as an art dealer, she was enchanted by the gallery wall already installed in the living area by the flat’s owners, Nathalie Bouchard and Annie Horth. “Annie works as an artistic director and fashion stylist, and some of these photos are her collaborations,” says Alessandra. “I love the editorial feel of them.”

To create an intimate yet dynamic seating area in the open space, traditional pieces – such as the tufted leather sofa – were arranged with more modern elements, like cowhide-covered sidechairs.
