The fireplace has a plaster front that mimics cement and is outlined in black stone. “Its bold lines were softened by tree stump style tables, a wool rug and wool pillows,” says Michelle. For a whisper of formality, the sofa is velvet and one side table has a marble top.

To make the breakfast area more fetching and functional, Rhiannon brought in a knockout dining table, paired it with shapely chairs clad in wipe-able leather-like vinyl and shifted the table into the centre of the room to anchor the space.

Artful blend

On a wall spanning 12 feet, the gas fireplace in the living room is a strong architectural presence. The chimney breast and the hearth are both clad in marble for a luxe finish. “We wrapped the fireplace interior in black to minimize the surrounds,” says Amanda. “We wanted to see the fire.” Blonde rift-cut oak floors are fresh against the darkness.

Since homeowner Sonya Spilkin wanted to work and entertain here, designer Sarah Walker needed to devise a serene area that included “as much comfortable seating and practical storage as possible, while keeping the look light, airy and welcoming,” says Sarah.

An offcut slab of Calacatta Viola marble elegantly tops the floating console. The stone’s perky mauve veining picks up on the plum accents throughout the living area, and the console itself doubles as a media unit, providing critical storage space.

Bright and inviting

Though non-working, the fireplace is still a fabulous focal point. “When we removed its existing insert, which had an ugly gold trim, I discovered this beautiful arching opening,” says designer Clair Parke. “I painted it charcoal grey to accentuate the shape and then added candles for a fire effect.”
