Two young sisters with two different design styles

Designer Joanna Vagelatos conjures up two unique bedroom schemes for a pair of young sisters.

Room 1: Girly Graphic

Belonging to five-year-old Emmerson, this whimsical bedroom makes a bold statement but doesn’t feel overly childish. That’s thanks to a subdued palette with subtle hits of cheerful colours and carefully selected playful accessories.

Since Emmerson is a girly girl, the homeowner wanted the room to be feminine but not in a head-to-toe-pink kind of way. The customized wallpaper was the starting point. Its painterly pink and icy blue diamond pattern imbues the room with a calm vibe.

A basket for toy storage is one of the only things you’ll find lying around. “I love using these baskets because of their unique shapes and colours. They’re made by women in developing countries, so they tell a story that mass-produced versions can’t,” says the homeowner. She asked designer Joanna Vagelatos to include tons of concealed storage, like drawers and hanging space, in the room. “Keeping things tidy and organized has to be easy for my daughters or it just won’t happen,” she says.

Although the toys may be out of sight, playful accessories were added to show a kid lives here. While the traditional curved headboard is fit for a grown-up, the garland adds a much-needed fun feel. The same goes for the cloud-shaped toss cushion, which echoes the headboard’s blue hue and pulls the cute cozy look together.

Seven-year-old Simone’s room boasts an expressive mix of colour and pattern. Despite its vibrant punch, the space feels airy and peaceful (to ensure this growing girl gets a good night’s sleep).

Simone is a cool and edgy kid, so Joanna had the cactus-patterned wallpaper custom-printed in a lively light green. Pairing it with pink accents creates a scheme reminiscent of the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel’s signature colour combo – just what the homeowner was after for her free-spirited girl.

A mini gallery wall was incorporated into both bedrooms, and the artwork was chosen with each girl’s personality and style in mind. Framed graphic designs and cute prints keep the arrangements age appropriate but can be easily changed out as their interests change.

The picture frames match the shapely table lamp, which lends a contemporary touch to the bedside area. Their matte white finish adds a smooth accent and contributes to the room’s soothing atmosphere.
