What Kids Want in Pink

Taking cues from the kids themselves, Sara Bederman created three enchanting bedrooms for three very different sisters.

"For inspiration, turn to your kids. Listen to what they love to create a theme for their rooms," says designer Sara Bederman.

Room One

Pop Art Playground

A banana swing at the Miami Museum of Ice Cream was the inspiration for the one that hangs in this 11-year-old’s bedroom. Sara nestled it in an alcove lined with reversible-sequin wall panels inspired by Toronto’s holiday Tunnel of Glam. Wall sconces provide extra light for reading or colouring atop the nearby rug, which was decked out with a glittery stool and brightly hued pillows.

Room Two

Polka Dot Dreamscape

Metallic gold-dotted wallpaper and a seashell chandelier shimmer in this 12-year-old’s room. Tucked under the eaves on the home’s top floor, the room’s desk, dresser and reading bench were fashioned as one continuous piece. A swoon-worthy pink velvet armchair swivels in all directions. The heartshaped desk chair is adorned in faux fur. Though white, the ultra-dense shag rug and pom-pom trimmed window shade provide texture.

Perfect for curling up to read, and clever enough to hold lots of storage, this built-in bench is even more inviting thanks to a team of touchable pillows. “Kids are tactile. They enjoy different textures,” says Sara. She opted for contrasting textures, including velvet, smooth metallic and sequins, that work together because they all build on the palette of white, pink and gold.

Room Three

Creative Castle

What four-year-old doesn’t want to wake up in a castle? Turrets top two custom shelving units that guard the princess-worthy bed, and pom-pom bedding meets a custom Disney-style mouse headboard flanked by mouse-shaped sconces. Striped wallpaper gives the illusion of more ceiling height, and window shades with bright pink embellishments fit right in with the Mickey floor rugs.

Dress-Up Digs

Welcome to the Imagination zone. Sara fashioned the cabana-style dressing room with Mickey and Minnie fabric. The sweet rocking-duck and hot pink pouf make playful perches. A floor mat with its signature mouse ears provides a cute spot for plopping down to read.
