1. Welcoming Warmth

The all-white kitchen has faded into the background and wood cabinetry (oak is a favourite) has taken over as part of a return to warm tones and nature-based shades. Even dark wood cabinetry is showing up in more dramatic spaces. This look seamlessly integrates the kitchen in open-plan layouts. If a reno isn’t on the horizon, introduce accents (lighting, barstools, accessories) in natural materials.

We’re seeing more and more small table lamps on countertops and shelves. If a plug-in style isn’t an option, use one of the new crop of stylish rechargeable lamps. Wall sconces continue to brighten up the kitchen, too!

This trend is simply everywhere and there’s no easier way to refresh a kitchen (no reno required!). Framed
art is a must-have in today’s kitchen; extra points are awarded if you bring in a vintage landscape oil painting in a battered gold frame.

4. Sophisticated Storage

Gone are the days when a row of cabinetry and a few drawers sufficed for storage. Kitchen designers can devise a place for everything by using ingenious cabinetry fittings. Ergonomic pullouts for deep cabinets; shallow shelves for glassware; separators in drawers; drawers-within-drawers for linens; and so much more. Functionality is paramount.

5. Patterned Runners

Pretty and practical, the trend of patterned runners in front of the range and by the sink means comfort underfoot and a fun injection of personality. Fab options of washable rugs make upkeep a cinch.

6. Curves Ahead

 Arched doorways, rounded islands and curvy counter stools are so popular. They soften the edges and the aesthetic in today’s kitchens.

7. The "Countersplash"
