A Mix Of Natural And Sleek Materials Creates A Setting That’S Earthy With An Urban Edge
The magic of this Vancouver kitchen reno by designer Alexandra Chapkin is in the mix of materials. Pale oak perimeter cabinetry; touches of black, white and stainless steel for edge; and a dramatic swath of Pietra Grigia marble for the backsplash combine to strike a modern and organic mood. But the star player is the generous olive green island, which features plenty of storage on one side and is roomy enough for seating, extra drawers and a strategically placed wine fridge on the other – naturally!

Brass feet and a tile “rug” set in the hardwood floor give the island a furniture feel, as do the cabinetry doors, which have a wider profile than those on the perimeter cabinetry. The stainless-steel appliances, says designer Alexandra Chapkin (shown right), looked so good next to the marble, green and oak that Alexandra left them exposed rather than hide them behind custom panels. A farmhouse-style sink and black window mullions are a subtle nod to the home’s 1914 vintage.

Hidden Charms
An uncluttered, organic vibe presides thanks to the modern, elegant oak cabinetry that conceals an army of small appliances and the dishwasher. Blooms from the garden, set in a vintage glass jug, emphasize the precedence of nature.
