Designers Carrie McCarthy and Tanja Hinder create a cozy and casual contemporary kitchen suitable for cooking, entertaining and family time.
A 1911 house suffered from a choppy layout, dark rooms and bad flow. Its kitchen was no exception: The outmoded design needed an update to better serve this family of four. The solution? Designers Carrie McCarthy and Tanja Hinder of Marrimor Design Studio extended the kitchen at the back and opened it up by tearing down a load-bearing wall.
See how this 375-square-foot space was transformed into a brand new minimalist kitchen design below.

Renovating the kitchen
The goal of this kitchen renovation combined clean lines, a quiet palette and a mix of natural materials to create a contemporary space that's also approachable and warm. Traditional architecutral detailing, such as the moulding around the windows and doors, alludes to the era of the house.

After the renovation
With a home-office nook, a large island and a multi-purpose alcove (with a TV, wine storage, shelves, drawers and banquette seating), the kitchen acts as the hub of the open-concept main floor.

Strategic storage
Well-thought-out storage keeps the kitchen efficient and organized. For example, the office nook includes a cupboard made for the printer; small appliances can be stored in cubbies next to the fridge; and a recycling system is hidden underneath the sink.

Reno materials
Paint-grade cabinetry mixed with rift-cut American walnut accents; engineered stone countertops; limestone mini-brick mosaic backsplash tiles; white oak flooring with a UV-oil finish; invisible touch-latch hardware; stainless steel appliances.

Design elements
Elements like built-in appliances, warm light grey countertops and minimalist pale grey-painted flat-panelled cabinetry (with invisible touch latches) give the space an unkitcheny appearance.
