A living room gets a cosmetic makeover, taking it from girly and pink to graphic and sophisticated.
A style aficionado streamlines her girly living room into a more sophisticated space perfect for both entertaining guests and spending time with the family.
"Once pink and girly, my style has evolved," says homeowner and designer Christine Dovey. "In my living room, I wanted to simplify the look, change the layout to one seating area and give centre stage to a couple of recent art requisitions."
The gallery-like space deftly balances masculine and feminine style. "I love how the art creates focal points," says Christine. "The room is simple but graphic; feminine but still strong and edgy."
The TV was banished to the basement to give the living room a more formal feel, and the sofa and settee were reconfigured with new chairs to create one large seating area in place of two smaller ones. "Now it's more suited to entertaining and gives the kids a lot more space to move around," said Christine.
By scrapping overly embellished items - like faux-fur-covered chairs - in favour of more sculptural and graphic pieces, Christine achieved the simplified look she craved. Meanwhile, gold accents lend a glamorous effect.
An artful DIY touch: Christine gave her big-box coffee table a bespoke look by having the base redone in a gold-leaf finish. "I styled it with some books, a brass deer sculpture and a vintage vase that I patterned myself with a black Sharpie!" she says.
