A modern interior with out-of-sync country-style decor and differing ceiling heights is transformed into a sophisticated living room with a sleek, seamless style.
Creating a cohesive look for this living room meant working with two different ceiling heights and 20 feet floor-to-ceiling windows. Find out how designer Laura Stein overcame this design challenge to create a classic, but contemporary space.

Design solution
Designer Laura Stein needed to find furniture for the living room that wasn't too small for the high-ceilinged section or too large for the low one. "I had most of the pieces custom made," she says.

The look
"The room is sophisticated yet warm: It's a playful juxtaposition of contemporary and classic style with curved and rectlinear forms," says Laura. "For instance, some of the furnishings are modern and clean-lined but reference traditional shapes and details."

The layout
The sofa's large scale and pulled-forward position downplay the varying ceiling heights. The face-to-face seating arrangement makes conversation easy when company comes, while the wingback chair is perfect for watching the TV, which is located above the fireplace.

The materials
In addition to light upholstery and dark wood, Laura repeated metal and glass accents to keep the look from feeling too heavy, to bounce the light from the windows and to create cohesion.

The extras
By flanking the fireplace with matching custom sideboards, Laura extended the line of furniture beyond where the ceiling height changes and kept the room from feeling chopped up by its architecture.
