"The family room is all about the stone fireplace and the driftwood coffee table," says Dave Leavitt, general manager of Fox Design Studio. "They share an organic sensibility that brings the beauty of the landscape in and represents the tranquility of the beach and all of its colours."

For as long as the owners can remember, the stone fireplace in the living room has been whitewashed. Propped on the mantel is a portrait of their grandmother.

Throughout the home, interior walls are clad in horizontal pine planks, modernized with glossy white paint, and the ceiling beams are exposed for a loft-like feel. The living room fireplace, with its floor-to-ceiling surround, features the same bricks used on the floor and outdoor patio.

Ribbed millwork and a distinctive round facade make the fireplace a focal point. “Though in many homes the fireplace and TV are designed into the same wall, we wanted the fireplace to be a stand-alone feature that anchored the room and accented a more intimate seating area,” says designer Suzanne Tetrault.

The architectural focal point in the living room is its ceiling, with wooden beams mounted on a 45-degree angle over white beadboard. Down-filled slipcovered sofas invite family and friends to sink in for long conversations. A TV is cleverly concealed behind the doors above the fireplace.

In the living area, the black chandelier draws the eye up to the cathedral ceiling. The armchair beside the fireplace has special meaning – it came with the property. “There was a small house on the land and we found this lovely armchair inside, so it seemed only right to refinish it and give it new life,” says Lidia.

The living room's focal point is a hand-carved marble fireplace flanked by vintage crystal sconces and contemporary black and white prints. The herringbone pattern on the inside of the firebox is repeated in the flooring as well as in the custom cowhide rug.

White painted brick in juxtaposition to the wide, smooth-finished, ebony frame makes the fireplace the focal point of the living room. The circular mirror above attracts attention to the area too, owing to its black outline. The roundness of the mirror, as well as the vases, serves to soften any of the room’s sharp angles.

Since this family of four has a penchant for the outdoors, the designer incorporated nature-inspired finds, such as the large print depicting a foggy forest hanging above the fireplace. “The image reminds me of being in the woods and escaping the everyday,” says Sarah. She had the piece stretched onto canvas and then resined to deliver more of an ethereal effect.

“The great room’s fireplace has an asymmetrical built-in cabinet that hides a pullout turntable for parties,” says Alison.

“Tiling the fireplace in blue was the very first thing we did,” says Lindsay. The hearth is flanked by custom millwork that displays natural baskets and maritime glass. “Brass library lights and hardware add a hit of sparkle during the day and a golden glow at night,” says the designer.

“In the living room, I wanted to create a convivial sitting area focused on the fireplace,” says designer Viki Mansell.

“The fireplace’s marble veining is very organic and natural, whereas the chairs’ blue and white upholstery is graphic and punchy. They work well together yet are so completely different, they don’t compete. The clients already owned the chairs but we wanted to reupholster them and thought it could be a great graphic moment, and we were right! The chairs are my favourite element in the space.”
