Kitchen design: Light modern renovation
Kitchen: Before
The dark, traditional kitchen in this 1940s Edwardian bungalow "was quite nice, but it just wasn't our style," says homeowner Neal McLennan.
Kitchen design
The homeowners opted for IKEA's Sofielund kitchen cabinetry (instead of the contemporary go-to of high-gloss white), which creates a warm, minimalist aesthetic with its grey-toned wook-look flat-panelled doors. "We wanted a modern look, but not harshly modern," says Neal, who's been around the decor block - he's an editor at Style at Home's sister publication Western Living.
Family-friendly space
"In the newly opened up, brighter, more family-friendly space, the TV or music can be on or somebody can be sitting on the sofa reading, and you're still connected to them if you're in the kitchen," says Neal.
