Style destination: Panama City

A trip to Panama City will no doubt include loads of beach time, hiking through jungles, visiting the Panama Canal and experiencing the Latin city’s incredible nightlife. But it’s also an amazing spot to dine, shop and soak up Panamanian culture. Here’s how to do it.

Where to stay: Hard Rock Panama City
In the heart of the modern section of the city, and amidst all the incredible  architecture, you’ll find one skyscraper that stands out: The Hard Rock Panama City. With 66 floors and over 1,000 rooms (not to mention numerous restaurants and bars all in the hotel), it might be hard to leave this spot. Where to drink: Tantalo’s rooftop bar

Want the best views of the modern city from the Old Town? Make your way to the rooftop of Tantalo, a boutique hotel, restaurant and bar all in one that’s one happening spot.

TRY: The Zen-Jito. A combination of Yerbabuena, gin, lime and cucumber juice, and a dash of ginger syrup to sweeten things up in this refreshing cocktail. Tántalo Hotel, Casco Viejo, Panama City.

Where to eat: Ego y Narciso in Casco Viejo
After dining for a few nights at the Hard Rock’s on-site restaurants, a taste of traditional Latin cuisine (in this case, with an international and Peruvian twist) will be in order. Book a table on the outdoor patio at Ego y Narciso so you can dine by fairy lights and take in local street performers in the Plaza Bolivar as well.

MENU PICK: The lomo saltado – a steak stir-fry/stew with tomatoes and peppers atop a bed of risotto. The mojitos are also top notch and deserve a few sips. Ego y Narciso in Casco Viejo  style-dest-panama-papiro.jpg

Where to shop: Papiro y Yo

With a colourful and eclectic selection of paper-made gifts (think gorgeous jewellery made with bright paper, wound into intricate twists and loops, and handmade notebooks, coasters and napkin holders), this is the spot to hunt down something unique. What to do: Visit the Panama Canal

An engineering wonder, the Panama Canal, which opened in 1914, and the Panama Canal Museum at the Miraflores Locks are musts when visiting the city. If you have the time to see a ship go part way through the canal, do so. It will be an amazing experience to see this man-made engineering feat. style-dest-panama-town.jpg

What to do: Wander the Old Town (Casco Viejo)

A great juxtaposition to the modern landscape of skyscrapers and the intense light of the downtown core is the dimly lit, quaint streets of the Old Town (Casco Viejo). Spend an afternoon ducking into museums, sipping cocktails at sidewalk cafes and finishing the night with a classic Panamanian meal at a local restaurant.
