The Boutique Brooklyn Hotel Is A Hub For Art & Culture

Expect style, views, vibes, and sleep at this downtown Brooklyn art and culture hub.

I’ve stayed in many hotels, short-term rentals, and even long-term rentals in Brooklyn, and there’s one thing they all had in common: unpredictable sleep. Between the J train, sirens, and all-hour businesses, you never know if you’ll get enough shut-eye to enjoy your time in the city.

When I woke up after my first night at the Ace Hotel Brooklyn, I immediately knew something was different—I had slept. Seven and a half uninterrupted hours, according to my Oura ring. Thanks to blackout curtains, a not-too-soft organic mattress, and the low hum of the fan to drown out outside noise, I got the best sleep score I had had all week.

No matter which of the 287 rooms you find yourself in (mine was a medium skyline), you can expect the same sleep aids. There’s also the quirky touches we’ve come to love from the Ace, like a SMEG mini fridge, Japanese bath products, locally-made and vintage furniture, artisanal drinks and snacks for purchase, and even a Tivoli radio and Music Hall turntable. The custom, handmade fire art pieces hanging on the wall are different in every room and all done by local artists.

There’s a place to put your luggage and usually a chair, couch, desk, or some combo of the two. Higher-up rooms can have a view of the Statue of Liberty, while others look onto Brooklyn’s downtown core, Boerum Hill, or neighbouring condos.

And although I loved my room, the curated art gallery-esque loungey lobby is where the Ace Hotel usually shines—and the Brooklyn outpost is no different.

It starts before you even enter the hotel, on the street, where you’ll find a beautiful outdoor light installation by Roman and Williams, ironwork, and exposed concrete that nods to architecture inspired by Brutalism.

Inside, you'll find a long public library-style table inviting the community to come and co-work, a concrete room with a glass ceiling that's filled with plants and home to a concrete bar where you can sip coffee and yap, and a vibey lounge and bar area with brown leather sofas and tables for sitting back and enjoying a cocktail and bite to eat (they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner). The neighbourhood is welcome to come and spend time here, so expect it to be bustling.

Located between the edge of downtown and Boerum Hill, it’s easy to get around (many of Brooklyn’s subway lines pass through a five-minute walking radius) whether you want to explore other parts of the borough or head into Manhattan.

There’s a Trader Joe’s, Target, and Whole Foods nearby if you want to pick up any American snacks or goods you can’t get at home. The beautifully designed coffee shop Devoción is only a two-minute walk away, as is French-inspired Café Kitsuné and trendy chain Blue Bottle.

Whether you’re spending most of your time in the area or taking in the bigger sights of New York City, the Ace Hotel Brooklyn is the type of hotel you’ll actually want to hang out in. I found myself excited to go back at the end of each day—I didn’t feel like I was missing out on anything by heading back “home” because the place itself is so full of life, yet I could still rest and recharge.
