What's it Like To Stay In A $14,000-A-Night Hotel?

Check into the presidential suite at London’s The Beaumont to find out!

Of course, this sort of stay is entirely aspirational, a fantasy, really, but who wouldn’t be curious to see the perks and deep comforts, not to mention the design inspiration, of an unabashedly luxurious hotel? Here’s a sneak peek at some of the amenities on offer, along with luxury looks you can recreate at home for less than a royal ransom.

Location, location, location

The Beaumont’s location in London’s exclusive Mayfair neighbourhood is undeniably special. Beyond the upscale postal code, there is its quiet appeal; it’s so hushed you’d never guess you were steps from the bustle of Oxford Street. Then, there is The Beaumont’s prime position across from Brown Hart Gardens. Set on a raised 10,000-square-foot terrace, these enchanting gardens are dotted with ornamental plantings and framed at one end by a domed building with noticeably tall doors. Royal buffs take note! This structure is rumoured to have been built to house Queen Victoria’s pet elephant—it’s bits of folklore like this that make The Beaumont alluring even before you cross its threshold.

Make an Entrance

Forget a utilitarian check-in desk. The Beaumont’s lobby delivers a sensation of extreme comfort and style. Marble checkerboard floors, walls lined in European fiddleback cherrywood, framed oil paintings and burled-wood art deco furniture are just some of the sumptuous touches that set the rich tone.

Mix Master

The Roosevelt, The Beaumont’s presidential suite, is a masterclass in design (legendary tastemaker Thierry Despont is behind the look). Bespoke furnishings mix pattern, colour and texture in a way that is both luxurious and welcoming — note how the cushions and drapery share the same print for subtle design continuity. The attention to detail extends to the modern art throughout the five-bedroom suite and even its reading material, a carefully curated selection of novels and non-fiction from Heywood Hill, a renowned Mayfair bookshop.

Tactile Touches

The warm layered effect of the suite is thanks, in part, to the rich fabrics. Rugs are hand-tufted, lampshades are dupioni silk and lounge chairs are upholstered in Loro Piana velvet. Perhaps the most sumptuous use of texture is on the walls, which are upholstered in fawn-coloured flannel suede.

Bathing Beauty

All of the bathrooms offer a lively seam of inspiration, and this one in particular creates a beautiful coherence that has a thoughtfully decorated effect – who can resist framed artwork in a bathroom? It feels so finished, and the black-and-white photos are a sharp tie-in with the glossy marble surfaces.

Pretty Perks

The Old-World glamour of The Beaumont’s spa lowers the shoulders even before you indulge in a bespoke treatment designed to reinvigorate weary travellers. Hotel guests also enjoy complimentary perks, including a chauffeured car for local drop-offs, a continental breakfast and  minibar snacks and beverages. Turndown is a treat too – chilled glass bottles of still and sparkling water and chocolate bars are left bedside each night.

Take the Luxury Look Home

Many of The Beaumont’s hotel-stay touches can be copied at home without the presidential suite price tag.

First Impressions

Make your entryway a welcoming space that feels luxurious, rather than just a spot to dump shoes and coats. Lamps and dimmer switches offer flattering light, while furniture can create practical seating and charming vignettes. Flooring, such as black and white checkerboard tiles, along with wallcoverings, from panelling to wallpaper, can be used to dramatic effect here.

Bedding

Consider adding a monogram to your bedding (The Beaumont’s bed cushions feature a signature “B” in silvery thread). It’s a one-time expense that isn’t costly and adds a bespoke touch. The hotel’s Director of Marketing & Communications, Martine de Geus, also shares a handy hack. She says, “Use a plant spray bottle filled with water (and a little bit of scent) and sparingly spray your cotton duvet cover and pillow slips. You can then stroke your linens into hotel-perfect, freshly ironed-look smoothness.”

Matchy-Matchy

Take the Beaumont’s lead and use the same patterned fabric for cushions and drapery. It’s an easy trick that creates a bespoke designer look.

Do Touch

Incorporate luxurious fabrics in small doses: a silk lampshade here, a nubby rug there, some velvet cushions throughout. The mix will feel dramatic without breaking the bank.

Artwork

You may not have a Man Ray, Henri Matisse or Joan Miro on hand like The Beaumont, but you can curate your own selection of artwork and layer a lively effect into any room. Try grouping art with a similar theme – all black and white, for example – and placing it in unexpected places, like a bathroom or powder room.

Finishing Touches

The Beaumont excels at thoughtful details that are easy to copy at home. Why not curate a collection of reading material for your living room or guest room? How about replacing mismatched shampoo, conditioner and body wash with one brand and uniform-sized bottles or hanging robes on hangers for an organized, room-serviced look?
