P.E.C. Getaway: Why The Eddie should be on your travel radar

Southern Ontario’s Prince Edward County is a go-to getaway, and a stay at The Eddie, a boutique hotel and farm, only adds to the charm.

Why is everyone flocking to Prince Edward County?

It’s a crowd-pleaser, really. There’s farm-to-table food, acclaimed chefs and restaurants, wineries, breweries, cideries, art galleries, spectacular beaches, spas, shopping, cycling, sailing…the list goes on. And the delights of this buzzy island in Lake Ontario are four-season—there’s something on offer any time of year, plus it’s an easy road trip from Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.

Sounds exciting. So, will I want to book at The Eddie?

Yes! There are many lovely places to stay, but The Eddie combines the rural charm of The County, which is rooted in agriculture and farming, with the reassuring comfort of a boutique hotel.

Tell me more…

Well, it’s set on a historic 78-acre farm between the picture-postcard towns of Wellington and Bloomfield. The expansive property, which includes a 19th-century manor house, carriage house, century-old event barn, outdoor theatre, pond and 600 apple trees, sets a bucolic tone that will make you feel worlds away while still being a magnet for Instagram.

I love that!

Speaking of Instagram, check out Hollywood actor and professional poker player Jennifer Tilly’s account—she stayed at The Eddie last summer and was smitten with it.

That’s pretty cool. What are the rooms like?

They pack an aesthetic punch! Individually decorated guest rooms conjure laid-back elegance with a lively mashup of contemporary and vintage furniture, original local artwork and nuanced Farrow & Ball hues (one suite even features its original 1920s wallpaper). The effect is more 'enchanting country house' than hotel. The bathrooms combine modern comfort with zingy style and have all-natural toiletries made exclusively for The Eddie to round out the bespoke feel. There are 10 rooms in total: five suites in the main house, two in the carriage house and three seasonal bunkie cabins, which are a budget-friendly option.

Who goes here?

Like The County, The Eddie is a crowd-pleaser. It hosts family reunions, weddings, and lots of couples. The romantic surroundings have even inspired matrimonial proposals—there have been six so far and counting!

What about food?

The Wellington Farmers’ Market is held on the grounds from May till October, and there’s also a cheese and charcuterie shop, Nellie’s, which is a great source for stocking up on nibbles for the room or sightseeing.

Is breakfast included?

Yes, and it’s served with a generous dollop of provenance. The eggs are laid by chickens that roam the property, the jams are local and the moreish pain au chocolat is from PECish Baking Co. in nearby Milford. A traditional full English and freshly made Belgian waffles are two firm favourites and a nice way to start the day, whether you’re off to explore the bounty of The County or just settling in to savour the stress-busting comforts of The Eddie.
