Interiors: Modern rustic home

Built on the foundations of 19th-century department store pioneer Henry
Morgan’s hunting lodge, this elegant country home is nestled on the shores of Lac de la Cabane in the Laurentian countryside, just north of Montreal. Its owners, Laurentian native Guylain Verdier and his wife, Katrine, discovered the site during a walk through the woods. Guylain ended up purchasing a huge parcel of land, mostly for development, but set this site aside for his family. The 5,000-square-foot house was designed in collaboration with Marc Julien and Denis Cyr of JBC Architectes and designer Jean-François Ménard.

Kitchen and dining room
In the kitchen and dining area, modern touches, such as white lacquered cabinetry and contemporary acrylic chairs, are balanced with more rustic elements, such as the recycled-wood dining table and the bookshelf. The contrast is in keeping with the rest of the home’s decor. interiors-modernrustic-entryway.jpg
Entryway
With exposed beams above and pine and slate finishings below, the tone is set in the home’s spacious welcoming entryway, which leads back toward the living spaces and views of the lake. The choice of natural materials, such as wood, stone, linen and wool, creates a clean and fluid continuity between the indoors and out. interiors-modernrustic-sittingar.jpg
Seating area
Simplicity and unity best describe the approach taken to the home’s structural and interior design. This theme is readily apparent in the choice of colourful furniture. interiors-modernrustic-familyroo.jpg
Fireplace
A raised-stone fireplace is the focal point for gatherings of family and friends, who settle into the plush, baize-covered sofa. Summer or winter,
the wall of windows provides a majestic view of the surrounding natural
environment, producing a wonderfully cosy fireplace refuge. interiors-modernrustic-livingroo.jpg
Cheery living room
The simplicity of the decor increases the feeling of refinement thanks to the organic quality of materials used – wood, stone, wool and linen – and the fact that it is a neutral room. interiors-modernrustic-bedroom.jpg
Master bedroom
The master bedroom uses structural avantcorps to its advantage: The room’s reading nook is flooded with natural light, with windows that make you feel as if you’re suspended in the forest, overlooking the lake. “Katrine asked me to create a box bed similar to one she liked in a decor magazine,” says designer Jean-François Ménard. The hemlock built-in headboard links two tall cabinets.
