Q&A: Painting Your Floors

You’ve got design questions. We’ve got the answers. Designer and Style at Home contributor Karl Lohnes solves your decorating challenges.

Question:

I live in an older home with very worn wood floors in the kitchen. I have painted the cabinets a mossy green and want to paint the floors. What colours should I use?—Tina T., via email

Answer:

Painted kitchen floors can create a wonderful casual vintage look. I suggest painting a classic black-and-white diamond or stripe pattern to add verve. The white will brighten up the kitchen while the black will add contrast and connect to bold dark elements in the room. The Rust-Oleum HOME Transformations Floor Coating Kit (each kit covers approximately 100 square feet) is a durable, easy-to-use prod- uct that allows you coat a variety of wood flooring without stripping, sanding or priming. Clean the floors, then apply the required basecoat colour and topcoat system for a brand- new look for your old wood floors.
