How To Get Rid Of Grease On Your Range Hood
Is your stove’s range hood coated in grease and grime? Here’s how to make it sparkle again.
A range hood is a well-loved—and used—kitchen appliance. By absorbing smoke from your stovetop, it keeps your kitchen air quality fresh and fumes to a minimum. But between splashes and spills, this appliance can get coated in grime and lose its efficacy. Giving it a good clean once in a while will keep its functionality and appearance up to par.
How To Clean Your Range Hood
1. Wipe Down The Outside
Using thick paper towels or rags, wipe down the exterior of the hood with a mixture of warm water and anti-grease dish soap (such as Dawn). You can also use a special degreasing cleaner, but we suggest testing it on a small section of the appliance to ensure it doesn’t strip the finish. Finally, give the hood a spray with a water and vinegar solution to polish it up.
2. Clean under the hood
If your range hood hasn’t been cleaned in a while, you may find a greasy and blackened underside from build-up. Use a gentle cleaning brush to scrub away grime, and if needed, try a mixture of baking soda and warm water. Wipe away the cleaning solution with a dry towel.
3. Clean the filter
Lastly, you’ll want to give your hood’s filter a good cleaning. The filter absorbs smoke, grease, and grime; too much build-up will prevent the filter from properly ventilating your kitchen. To clean it, simply remove the filter and soak it in a mixture of hot water, dish soap, and baking soda for about 20 minutes. Scrub it gently with your brush, then repeat the soak if needed. Once dry, reattach the filter to the range hood.
